...and so much more. So, we've got this sub-culture to the San Diego dive mex joint world made famous by Robertos and the 'ertos phenomena: the high-end, badass dive mex joints. There's the infamous Juanita's #2 in Encinitas, known for carnitas so good people will drive an hour to it, and there's an even finer subset: the trucks.
You've seen roach-coaches and maybe you've seen the coaches that just park in the same place every day, all day. Some are just another grilled burger and overpriced soft drink truck with questionable hygiene, and others are like the Mariscos German trucks: ultra badass seafood, fresh from the water and grilled seconds before it hits your hand. Check this out: http://mmm-yoso.typepad.com/mmmyoso/2008/06/tres-tacos-at-m.html for one review.
They've got a sit-down joint in the barrio that looks like the Crusty Crab, too. Have you eaten Marlin (not Brando, you sick fuck!)? It's meaty (not Brando, dammit!), dense and theirs is smoked to a ruby red, then chunked into a fresh tortilla with melted cheese and grilled peppers...amazing. AMAZING.
Marlin, shrimp & octopus tacos
I'm going for lunch. |

I miss san diego and the various -erto's. It's weird, OC has nowhere near the quantity of low price mex restaurants that SD has.
Marlin does sounds good... corn tortillas, cabbage, white sauce, salsa fresca. Damn I gotta go get some food now. |

The smoked "marlyn" looks like Chinese, "chasu" pork almost and smells smoky without any fishiness. They take several chunks and set them on the grill with some chile pepper, celery, onion and green pepper. While that sizzles, the old lady puts a fresh, house made corn tortilla on the grill, flips it and then sprinkles some casera cheese on it.
When the cheese is melted, the scoops up the marlyn and veggies, lays it on the melted cheese and hands it over. The tortilla is fresh, but lighty crisped on the outside while the steaming mass on top of it exudes the smoky aroma.
We chased it with camarones aguachiles, a pornographic cross between ceviche and burning naptha: shrimp and red onions cooked by lime juice and chili powder, garnished with layers of sliced cucumber. Hot chili powder.
Viva horchata, as it saved me. |

99 days out of 100, I'm with you, Lincolnz, trust me. However, the next time Slob comes down to the SD ghetto, I'll make an exception to get the smoked marlin.
I gotta go find another thread, because I did the BBQ thing this weekend... |
