Is anyone else growing tomatoes this summer? This is my first attempt.
I picked up about 8 or 9 different Heirloom varieties a couple of weeks back, from the Amish people at the flea market.
They have all sorts of awesome names...White Queen, Arkansas Travelers, Tappys Heritage, Japanese Black Trifele ..etc. etc..
I stuck them in 3 gallon contaners and used Happy Frog Organic soil. So far so good, but im worried about insects and varments.
I want to keep them organic. Wow..this is almost as fun as growing herb(or so I would imagine) Anyone have any tips or pics to share?
I will post pics as the bountiful harvest develops!

Put some wire cages around them to keep the birds away.

The term Heirloom refers to the Tomatoes past.
In some schools of thought the Heirloom name comes from the fact that they have been passed down; by seed for 50 years, others believe 100 years is the defining line.
All I know is that they are waaaay better than the B.S. grossery store choices.
Now lets think about B.L.T.'s mmmmmmmmm.........

I tried some organic gardening a few years back. Had problems with bugs but didnt want to use pesticide. Found some bug relief by using wood cinder ash from the outdoor firepit. Just a suggestion if you want to try it.

I am growing about 6 different kinds of tomatos this year. In the South, our bugs laugh at the word "organic" so I keep my garden well sprayed. I also put up a pretty big bird netting "cage" over both of my garden boxes. Last year, the birds got almost all of my tomatos. ugg! Not this time!!!! Bastages!

I also use old CD's hanging on string (reflection scares birds, chipmunks, etc) as well as aluminium foil around the bases of the plant (scares chipmunks and keeps some bugs out too).

(CLICK FOR LARGER PIC)

In the "back" box close to the fence..or "the Tomato box":
-Better Boy tomato
-Big Beefsteak tomato
-Park's Whopper tomato
-Roma tomato
-Golden Jubilee (yellow, tasty tomatos!)
-Crooked neck squash
-Straight neck squash
-Okra
-Ichiban Japaneese Eggplant (2)

In the "front" box...or "Pepper Box":
-Big Boy tomato (no room in other box)
-Sweet Red Bell Pepper (2)
-Bonnie's Green Bell Pepper (4)
-Sweet Banana Pepper (3)
-Jalepeno pepper (2)
-Okra (3)
-Poblano Ancho pepper (good to stuff!)

Nice selection there Chris.

I've just started to cut broccoli. Yum.
