I wish i had old shots of me and my friends, i started riding in 85-86 on a Burton 145 Elite (V-tail and with a skeg) rulled the powder, sucked on the hard packed ice.
Those are some rad shots, thanks for posting, brings back some good memories. |

Very rad indeed and lots of history.
I started out snowboarding back in 1987 on a Sims Switchblade.
Back then you could not buy snowboards over here and I tried to make my own version with a skateboard deck and some old cut off skis...never really worked. I'll see if I can scan a couple of shots as well. |

I was trying to figure out when I started snowboarding ... a kid asked me this past weekend and I realized that I have been snowboarding for possibly 20 years! It was either 87-88, or 88-89 .... It was on a new split tail Burton Cruise(r). The one with the mountains.
Is there a site out there like "Art of Skateboarding" for snowboards? I'd love to know what year a couple of my old snowboards are. |

| Mig, those are great, thanks for posting. Do you ever recall a brand called "Lofo" from back then? I think they would have been based in Quebec. |

Lofo is responsible for a lot of innovations that most snowboarders don't know about. He invented the hi-back. Showed up to a contest in Vermont with it and next thing you know Sims and Burton are offering them the next winter. Here's a funny anecdote: He invented the foldable hi-back has we know it today. Why? Because his boards didn't fit easily in his small car, a Renault 5. So he sawed off his prototype hi-backs, bolted them on each side of the basplates so he could fold'em and fit the boards in his car! All of this was documented in a great article in The Snowboard Journal magazine (RIP) about 3 years ago, I think. He also was the first to make composite boards with p-tex and metal edges when all the big guys were still doing horizontal laminates with paint on the bottom... 
He's been working on this for the past couple of years:

It's a board with integrated canting and custom flex adjustments. He's supposed to send me a custom freeride board to test out for him. I've helped design and test freeride boards for a couple of local manufacturers in the '90s that were making boards for some of the big brands back then. |
