Dia de los Muertos festivities have begun!! The Spanish tried unsuccessfully to erradicate it from Central America. Over 3000 years old, the Aztecs have used this three day period to celebrate the deaths, and in essence the lives, of loved ones gone by. Starting yesterday, throughout the pueblas of Mexico families will be baking or purchasing loaves and loaves of the most delicious bread I've ever known, el pan de muerto, the bread of the dead. Here in Texas it's flavored with orange zest, and star anise.
So, as I sat alone last night on Halloween, Samhain, or, dia de los muertos, drinking Vampire wine, I came up with this one.
French Toast del Muerto:
One loaf pan de muerto
Four eggs
1/2 cup of milk
cinnamon and granulated sugar to taste
Combine eggs and milk, and season with cinnamon sugar.
Slice bread of death into french toast-size pieces. Soak both sides of each slice in custard mixture for 30 seconds (very important) and then allow to drip freely before cooking (also, very important)
Heat a heavy skillet to medium heat, dry. when ready, add lots of butter to pan fry the toast in. Cook on each side for about 60 second or so.
Remove and serve hot with maple syrup, honey, fresh fruit and cream, whatever. Enjoy your breakfast, and take a moment to remember those who have gone before you.

The bread already has orange flavoring by way of extract or zest, so yeah, the GM would be perfect. Shame it's seasonal though... Unless you're a baker, which I'm not as into.
