Unless you're drunk too, don't go to Hector's late at night, as it's overrun with drunk students.

I'm sad to hear that Red Hot & Blue is gone. Bad location, but the food was good.

I figured I'd list a few more CH joints I liked well enough to remember.

Top of the Hill. I'm sure you're familiar with it, but they had a pretty good menu. A little more pretentious than it merited, but good regardless with a nice atmosphere. I wasn't a huge fan of their house beers though.

33? 34? Whatever. The Chinese buffet with a number for a name on Franklin, sort of near Crime Out--not the other place with a number for a name on Franklin... It's an above average Chinese buffet. Top notch gooners. Not that piddly half-a-bite shit some places try to pull.

K&W Cafeteria. I was a skeptic for a long time, but it's perfect hangover food. Avoid like the plague on Sundays though. The church (and the chu'ch) crowds run the place ragged.

Carrburritos. On Rosemary in Carrboro. Above average burritos. Not in my top 5, but hey, only five are... Variety of homemade sauces. The hippy vibe is a bit cloying though.

Mama Dips. On Rosemary in CH, vaguely near that super sketchy convenience store that's always full of cops. I only ate there once, and I really regret it. I wish I had either eaten there a million times or never--just so I wouldn't know what opportunities I squandered. Country/soul food, prepared by what might as well be the black woman from Stephen King's The Stand. The chicken and dumplings are out of this world.

And, for good measure, since you didn't know about Hector's, I figured you may not know about He's Not Here. A pleasant dive bar with a huge beer garden hidden on Franklin behind Caribou Coffee. There's a little path between Caribou and the building east of it (Ben & Jerry's? NY Pizza?) They'll sell you a decent sized bucket of beer (36 oz. or so) for next to nothing. Go there for Halloween. It's open every other day of the year as well at something like 9am.

If you ever have occasion to eat in downtown Raleigh, I've got some recommendations there as well...

There's a great BBQ place over off of 54, I think N on Merritt Mill or Smith Level (it's been a few years since I've been in CH, so in addition to the directions being hazy, it may not even be there anymore). If it's still there, it's in the same building as a little c-store and possibly a laundromat.

Green Monkey: Any more hints. I'm trying to mentally picture this. Crooks is on the corner of Merritt Mill and Franklin, but I think you'd remember that one.

atxJIMatx: The best mexican in town is Patio Loco, on West Franklin next to McD's. More authentic than the "americanized" El Rodeo, crap. Also, I've got a couple more personal fave food joints.

[Hit me up if you ever want go skate. Sunday am on campus is how we roll. Usually]

It's off 54, not near Franklin.

I've got an email out to my buddy who lived in CH longer than me who ought to be able to tell us for sure, but to the best of my recollection, it's on one of the streets that intersects with the 54 Bypass west of Columbia. It's to the north of 54, on the west side of the street. Looking at a map, it must be either the very tip of Merritt Mill or Greensboro south of Old Pittsboro, or else Jones Ferry west of Davie.

It wouldn't surprise me to find out that it's been out of business for a few years though. I'll let you all know what my buddy has to say.

I'm pretty sure Jim can find good Mexican chow. We call it TexMex here, so would it be North CarolinaMex there?

I truly feel sorry for you other States...

I know where you speak of, it's been gone at least since 99 (A mexican rest. moved in to that spot).

Darn It, I was hoping that you knew of some great grub that had been hiding from me since I moved here in 93. Now tell me where all the underground skate spots are.

@ TGM.. been to Dips, Carrburrito's, and K & W (we basically live right across 15-501 from K & W )-- their buttered coconut pie is the shit!
As far as Red Hot and Blue-- the guy Jim who runs it was a partner in RH&B and wanted out; so he got that location as part of the deal. I dig em, they have Pulled Pork, Easter Style AND Brisket (pretty damn good brisket as well); but he uses Earl Campbell's sausage-- not too bad , but there is wayyyyy better (ELGIN hot sausage, for example) and I don't have the heart to tell him that Earl Campbell's is what the links are on the rolly machine at stop n go in Tx.

@ Sir Squeal.. I'll have to check Patio Loco out..been digging la Hacienda (out by Borders) -- good tortas and their carnitas and al pastor rocks.
I have been pretty lax about getting out to skate for the last year-- working like a madman, sitting on my ass and enjoying too much scarfing material and battling Lyme Disease (my knees are fubared)... most sessions have consited of running cones out at the Friday center, tooling around that huge ass smooth ass parking lot and occasionally hitting a couple ditches -- one in Durham, one in Raleigh. pretty much lost my "sea legs" at this point and just need to get out and roll and get comfortable on a board again...

@ GOB-- yeah I am trying.. nothing as good as what 3.50 gets you at Taqueria Arandas; but they have some shit here that is awesome-- got some good jamaican food not too far away; but finding a proper hamburger -- something like you would get at Dan's or Fran's is a tough proposition....

I don't have any good skate spots to offer (or bad spots, for that matter) as I was still a year away from getting back on board when I lived in CH. I can tell you where all the frisbee golf courses are though...

Jim--I don't know about Dan's or Fran's burgers, but you need to get to Hector's. They're outstanding.

Dan's Hamburgers and Fran's Hamburgers are in Austin. Good old salty greasy fried burgers. Toasted bun, mustard, lettuce, pickles, diced onions, tomoato if you want .. They started off all as Dan's-- Dan and Fran were married. They split and half the restaurants became Fran's. Basically exactly the same-- same sign and font, just Fran Instead of Dan on some ... same burgers etc...
Just haven't found a burger out here that scratches my burger itch properly... have to give Hector's a shot.

One thing that's really cool here.. skating wise... the asphalt most places is sooo smooth, you can cruise around on park wheels... we had this tar chip shit in Austin that rode like total shit even on something like 75a Gumballs.
