I was wandering how you folks are making your color separations, especially for halftones... I tried the Fast Films "software" and it sucks big hairy balls since its just some horrible nonsensical plugin for photoshop which gives you unaccurate results time after time.

Ive also seen a few other color sep programs out there, but wanted your input first before wasting time and money on more crap.

Illustrator and PS both have built in color sep programs, you just need to have the correct PPD (printer description) to output them from laser etc..

egg, are you using the full retail version of fastfilms, i know the demo won't do it, also try the screenprinters.net forum for tips, and they have a help line you can call, i've never had a problem with it but the stuff we've been doing is'nt that complicated, i guess i'm not that much help --ryan

No, I was just checking out the demo first... sketchy and inaccurate.

Funny thing you should mention Scott Fresener and screenprinters.net. Ive had the worst experience with them.

A while back I got their T Shirt book from Amazon, which was OK. A lot of info I did not know. So after a while I decided to get their instructional DVD - pretty expensive if you ask me, but hey, nothings for free and it might be a good investment I thought.

So I tried contacting them. I sent them several emails. Nothing, no reply. A month later, two of their sellers answer at the same time, telling me this wont happen again, blah blah blah, and what could they do for me. I wrote back, only to never hear from them again. Horrible service so far.

I then contacted a friend in SF and asked if he could get the DVD for me and then ship it my way (I live in Santiago, Chile). Long story short, they sent it after 2 months of complaints. He sent it to me immediately without verifying the package. I got it 3 days later. Opened it and to my surprise, one of the DVDs was scratched right out of the box.

To make it worse, it turns out the DVD is PURE CRAP. Incredible amount of filler, amateurish editing at best. One of the most used phrases in it is "...but we wont be covering this on this dvd". I never felt so ripped off.

I could go on and on, but summing it up, I found out later (yes, too late I'm afraid) that theres a lot of people complaining about Fresener and his operation. They say hes a fraud and that all the screening shops he had he put them out of business, etc. But this would be the matter of a whole different post I guess.

This is why I wont go near these guys again.

damn man , that sucks i have had a problem with them about getting a box of film sent to me. they never called me and told me they were out at that time so i complained and got a free box. i saw the whole operation as i attended his class awhile back, they are ALL just a bunch of stoners but the classes proved useful, i get film and bulk ink for my epson from them and apart from buying the fast films and fast rip software thats about it. the software takes awhile to get used to cuz it needs tweaking of certain things but has suited my shop so far, i would copy it for you but they have some pretty crazy security on it. --ryan

hehe stoners... I would have imagined. DAMN HIPPIES!

I went as far as faxing them since I also wanted to attend those classes, not precisely cheap for someone like me living at the other end of the globe... but go figure, I never heard back from them either.

Anyway, thanks a lot for the offer, but dont worry. Fast Films is nothing but a set of pre programmed operations for Photoshop so I believe they could be done without the need for such (expensive) plugins... problem is I dont have a clue how to do these yet... any tips?

An what about VueRite? I hear its way better and more accurate...

Just order the book PHOTOSHOP 7 for Screen Printers By Joli Bellow (search Amazon.com) and all the info is in there. A little searching around the interweb and you should find techniques that will improve the lessons taught in the book.
