Hey! Just want to ask what kind of inks do you guys use, brands and type of inks, for printing your decks. I've been to a bunch of suppliers and asked for inks for screenprinting in wood and all they had were solvent based inks. Isnt there any water based or acrylic type option? I hate solvent based inks, that stuff will kill you. Thanx |

well, i know everyone may be against it, bit speedball makes an acrylic ink that is very easy and mess free to use, but it dries dull, but you just just spray over it w/ clear cloat gloss and it looks fine. thats just what i use, but most will tell you nazdar 9700 or something.

Thanks for the tip but unfortunatelly that I know of Speedball is not available in Portugal but I'm going to look for some acrilic ink solution. As usual its best not to completely trust the screen printing supliers, they will tell you what they need to in order to sell you their stuff even if there are other options... Thanx again! |

Cody, since you mentioned Nazdar inks, have you or anyone ever used the "2700 Series Aquasafe Water-Based All Purpose Gloss Screen Ink"? Its the only water based ink in their catalogue that can be printed on wood. I also have another question, when printing a deck you cant really say you're printing on wood, you're actually printing over a layer of varnish right? So in theory any ink that holds on to a varnish substrate is good for printing decks? I'm probably sounding really dumb stating the obvious or something but printing on anything but textiles and paper is all new to me. Thanks again. |

TW GRAPHICS 5500 or 5000 (one is gloss, one is matte, can't remeber right now) should be fine. It's an amazing waterbased ink, it's also really expensive (like, cheap=$80 cdn a gallon, on up to $261 a gallon for some reds. ) but it is soo good, totally worth the price. |

hey Jorge
I experimented with a few water based inks but i had real problems finding an ink that would key to the acrylic varnish. I had to settle with a solvent based ink in the end. I find that with this ink you get a super hard and glossy finish and even though it is a bitch to clean up you get a mask and som e heavy duty gloves and get used to it. I was using sericol inks, Polyplast is the name. Now i use a company called Kromex which make a very similar ink that keys better to the laquer on the boards and is a third of the price. It may be that it is only availible in England but the ink is called Super Vinyl Gloss, and it is sh*t hot for printing vynil stickers too. In fact, i found any ink that sticks to vynil also sticks to the laquer on the skateboards.
Just to let you know, Ive been skating Bilbao loads, this place is increbible. There is a skatepark a stones throw from the appartment!!! We havent been to Algorta yet but but I cant wait. Ill keep you posted.

Thanks to everyone for the tips. In the end I guess I'll just have to experiment with a few diferent brands to make my decision, most of the stuff you mention isnt available here, European brands have most of the market so most of the U.S. brands you guys use are not available her or only have some of the series but your help is precious in heading in the right direction! Stu thanks for the tip about the vinil ink, I'm going for that first, use my sticker inks for my first prints and see what comes out. Slap some layback grinds in Algorta for me, I'm out for a couple of months again, need new ankles... Thanx everyone! |
