most molds are CNC machined using a CAD program to control the cutting
and run the companies lots of dough per mold.
It is very possible to build your own mold but it is labor intensive, and requires a decent amount of power tools and experience using them.
Any imperfections in your mold will tranfer directly to any deck you make.
Before you go on with building a mold be sure you have the funds to build decks. It's possible to build a deck for around 10 to 15 bucks a pop, however the minimum amount of venneers you have to buy from a mill is very costly ($5000.00 last I tried) add to that the time and expense of bulding your molds, the proper hydrualics set up to press the decks at the proper pressure, certain power tools to finish the board (i.e. drumsander, router table) and screen printing costs. I found that to want to build decks on a small scale you have to be able to build on a large scale.
Anyway if all of that is not a problem for you, let me know, I have plans for building a mold drawn up I would be happy to sell to you ($5.00) |

Wow I thought this thread was gone. True cnc machined molds are expensive, and in my opinion the best way to get a true mold...just not the only way. |

If you still need help making a mould this might help. Grab a deck concave you like, two slabs of wood wide enough and long enough to match the deck and some body filler. MAKE UP the body filler and spread it thick, real thick, either wax your deck up or wrap it in clingwrap and press it into the filler and let it set, sand it back then do the same for the other side. This worked for us seven years ago and now we use aluminum moulds for making our decks now, any questions? fire away! |

that is one of those threads that should get a sticky and stay at the top of the forum.
I still reckon the concrete mold is the deal. load it up with shit load of bricks after glueing your wood and bobs. |
