| Wow.. 3 posts in one night... sorry... but i'm newa at this and have questions... i'm glad there is a forum for this... i have been hearing that heat tansfer is the way to go now adays... well where do i get the machines to do this? what type of printer prints this and what type of machine do i use to get it on the board itself? are the any drawbacks to this? thanx a bunch all! |

heat transfer, a cheap way to take the art out of skateboard manufacturing, in order to mass market our lifestyle. Sorry, Personally, screening is the way to go.
Anyways, a heat transfer machine for a deck is going to cost you $10,000+. |

Theres quality heat tranfers and shit tranfers. The best are ultra thin, partially printed with a high end industrial printer and then screened. When applied properly, they look fucking awesome.
This is the easist way to do full deck/nose to tail graphics -- as the transfer is flat when silk screened. |

The dudes who make my boards print the bottom ply first then press the decks. Seems a little crazy but the graphics turn out great and we can do top prints or put the whole graphic on the top, or in the middle if we damn well please.
Screening is much cooler than transfering but I'm sure if transfer shit didnt cost so much I'd be all over it. |

| That is how sierra nevada skateboards are printed. Before they are laminated. I have actually looked into a heat trans machine from madrid. Very cool stuff but 15,000.00 to start. I can see the advantage to using them they can produce much more vivid graphics and you can be alot sloppier when you laminated your decks cause the glue can gat all over the place sometimes. I get around the mess by putting wax paper between the decks when they are pressed. It makes it really easy to finish a deck too cause all you have to do is cut and sand and laquer. You could get a demo video from Madrid to see the process in action and it clears things up. Contact Cadillac or sumdumsurfer at madrid. |

Ill agree that some transfers look excellent, but I dont Care. Ill take an out of register screenprint over a perfect transfer any time.
Screenprinting is an artform in itself. It has a look and feel that cannot be produced with a transfer. The subtle differences between prints, the limited color change or blended run, expermental prints, the ability to create cool art as you create your product, which in this case most people around here consider to be Fine art. Even if the transfers are screened or whatever It's not the same.
To me, Heat transfers take a big chunk of the soul out of skateboard art. Im sad to see that is the direction the industry is headed. but like everthing else it comes down to money. and thats not going to change anytime soon.
But as an artist, a screenprinter and skateboard lover I say
 FUCK HEAT TRANSFERS!!!!
Im also not trying to start an argument or be hostile Slobair, as I do appreciate this place very much and realize all the work you must put into it. But I do feel strongly about this subject. |

| This is 'heated' discussion! I love screenprinting but the ease of heat transfer i can understand and i think that is what we all have to take into account. I am not up to speed with your pricing on decks in the USA but here in AUS. a screen printed deck with the same pic as a heat transfer would cost more...Anyway does anyone know where i can get or what kind of ink is used for heat transfers. I'll screen em by hand and then transfer em in the flat when i need em - just to keep everyone happy...peace out. |
