I bought a NetGear wireless router a couple of years back when my wife bought her iPad.
I'm not not very techy so I assumed I would be better off buying my own rather than having another fee from my cable provider.
I don't really remember paying a fee to set it up or it must not have been very much, but now they want to ding me for $140 annual payment.
Am I getting completely hosed or is this normal ?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.. |

Depends on the model number you have. There are Wi-Fi routers, then there are Wi-Fi routers that also include Fibre/Cable/DSL modems - if yours is not the latter, then they are charging you for the modem rental. Then you would plug your router into the LAN port of that to give the other devices in your home access to the web. |

find out how they deliver the service (fibre, cable, or DSL) and we'll go from there |

Most wireless routers can handle at least 5 or 6 wireless devices, you just have to set it up for you to use. Try using her password on your phone. Your cable company won't even be aware of how many devices you are using and its really none of their business.
I run 3 cell phones, an ipad, a laptop, via the wireless and hard wire for the tv in the bedroom, the tv in the living room and my computer. |

Don’t rent a crap modem/router combo for the usual $5-$8 a month from your provider. Spring for a mesh network if you have a good size home or at bare minimum an AC router if smaller. Most people don’t even realize it but they run close to 12+ items in their home that are feeding off the signal.
You are ending up paying $140 for a rental when you could’ve had a better quality one for under $200 that you own. Or a mesh network for around $299 |
