Dear members of the family.
After our five day roadtrip from Seattle to Portland in July we will fly from Portland straight into San Francisco and will go all the way down to San Diego by car.
We're planning to take the 1 and would like to stop about three times in between SF & LA.
Any great spots or recommandations we would defintely need to stop or sleep over? Towns, Hotels, B&B's, hostels, ... all welcome.
Also area LA. Stuff we defintelly should need to see there? I had the skatelab in Simi Valley already in mind and the wife wants to do Universal Studio's. Any recommended places to stay for the days we wil be there in that area?
And for the San Diego guys same question actually. Every comments or tips are welcome.
Thx & cheers! |

South of SF, Santa Cruz or Monterey are cool cities to stay in, if you go to Santa Cruz, stop by Bills Wheels, rad shop.
Central coast, Morro Bay or Pismo Beach are good beach cities to stay in.
LA area, stop in rip city skates or south bay skates, best shops around.
If you go through the huntington beach area, hit me up. i'll buy you a beer.
i'm sure other people will have good ideas too, but these are a few places i like . |

Also, skip LA and spend the extra time in SD.
San Diego the real version of what the Euro TV says LA will be like. Baywatch etc. |

Thx for all the reply's, really appreciated!
This is what our plan is so far after looking into all the reply's.
We're thinking about 3 nights San Francisco. Go to LA with three stops in between via the 1. One night in Monterrey, one night San Luis or Morro Bay & one night Santa Barbara. Then 4 nights LA and 5 nights San Diego. But because some of you mentioned to spend more time in San Diego we might do a night less in LA. |

IMO you don't need to choose between spending more time in LA or SD but can easily spend fewer nights between SF and LA, especially if there's more than one person driving. The scenery is all there from the car on the 101 and you can easily make short stops along the way whenever you feel like it. Just don't make the mistake of pushing it without stopping at all and then arrive tired in LA in early evening traffic.
As for stops along the way I'd recommend Santa Cruz and make sure you schedule a factory/museum tour with NHS in advance by email. Either other place mentioned will be great if you insist but you won't need three nights.
Also unless you love driving (doesn't sound like it) or you need the car while in SD consider taking the train from LA. The scenery is beautiful at times but not as nice as between SF and LA and by that time you've had enough.
Don't forget spending the extra $ on a GPS/navigator. |
