It's the only beef my wife will eat! However, I prefer the grass fed, steroid free beef from the farmers co-op near here. The beef has an actual flavor, as do the chickens. There is nothing at the supermarket that even comes close. |

Gramps raised cattle for family - let em graze all year in natural prairie, with hay on the side. He had a grain finisher he took to his grave, but did not involve corn...probably wheat, barley, and other things he grew. Never had steak or burgers that tasted the same.
Ready to buck it all and start a sausage biz out there... |

I'm not arguing against your claim that grain produces a better quality steak than corn. Actually, I wasn't aware that cattle were fattened with grain. You on the other hand seem to know quite a bit on the subject.
Gramps is a hobbyist farmer. His herd usually runs somewhere between 60 and 120 cows. He feeds them a little corn in addition to the grass. He produces the corn, so it is cheap. As I understand it, he sells the cows in an auction to farmers that feed the cows exclusively grains (corn and maybe other grains) and then sell the cows to meat packers.
Cows love corn. That is for certain. They run to the trough to eat it. Don't know how it could make them sick but it could be possible.

**Buffalo is tasty meat. I also really like Ostrich which is very very low in the bad stuff |

It doesn't make them sick. It just makes the meat taste and look not as good.
The only value in corn is fattening them up. Unfortunately, it just adds fat where there's fat and gives it a yellowish tinge.
Cattle that are heavily corn fed do not taste great. And the meat doesn't look good. Corn now and then likely wouldn't
t hurt—its the cattle that are fed primarily corn that are really just kind of nasty (won't kill you though).
Grain also fattens them up. Farmers initially did it here so they'd make it through the winter when the grass is covered in snow. Fortunately for them, grain, mostly barley, fattens them up differently. It not only adds to existing fat stores, it contributes to overall growth and it also increases the marbling in the meat which makes the meat more tender and more flavorful. |

Switching a cow from grass to grain is so disturbing to the animal’s digestive system that it can kill the animal if not done gradually and if the animal is not continually fed antibiotics. These animals are designed to forage, but we make them eat grain, primarily corn, in order to make them as fat as possible as fast as possible." |
