Thought I'd post the progression of the latest graphic from Broken and explain some of the inspiration and decision making process.

I wanted to do something original but also wanted to have little nods to things that inspired me through the years. Pretty well anything Science Fiction sucked me in completely as a kid. I also loved Andy Howell's style so tried to emulate it a bit.

Anyway.... here we go.

Here's the first sketch I did for Jason K (the real artist who did the fantastic work) to give him an idea of the character I wanted to develop. I wanted a juxtaposition b/w high tech space travel and him wearing an old WWI aviators helmet and goggles. Also a nod to the Rick Ibasetta Pelican graphic. Antennae seemed to give it a bit of a flare and reminded me of the Andorians from the original Star Trek series.

Here's then the general pose I wanted the dude to be in. I envisioned this alien crash landed on a planet reading the Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy. You can see all my little notes tearing the drawing apart and showing how I'd like to see things tweaked (oh if only I could really draw!)

I sketched out a basic idea of the layout here. The original image was only an inch big so it's pretty damned rough to say the least. Dunno how Jason was able to do what he did based on the crap I started him on. I wanted it to be this desolate place with maybe a skull buried in the sand at his feet. Big alien world in the sky overhead and his ship crashed and smoking in a rock formation in the distance.

He was able to then in no time at all crank out this cleaned up version.

... and throw out some layout versions of his own.

More to come in the upcoming days. Final colours will be revealed when boards are in stock (likely just over a month from now). Check out the Press Release section for teaser ads giving hints of the upcoming decks.

So we had the basic idea of the character and the scene but needed to flesh it out some more. I wasn't a fan of the human nose as I wanted people to be sure he was an alien. I also wanted to keep that Andy Howell vibe and a sort of anime vibe so had the nose changed back to how I'd orginally drawn it.

Jason didn't really like the antennae so kept working on a few versions. I call this one the "snuffleupagus" version. Or was it "blues Clues"? Either way they seemed like sad dog ears he could breathe through like an elephants trunk so it didn't work for me.

From there Jason did much thinner versions of the antennae. I think of this one as the "ant man" antennae cuz he looked like he might be a bug or something. Again it didn't really work for me. You'll have to ask him what the stuff on the ear flap means.

Next came the Dr. Seuss antennae. They reminded me of the Who's down in Whoville from the Grinch Who stole Christmas.

Here you can also see we dropped the cracked lens. I felt it was too much detail and it also looked like it might be a pupil with capillaries or something.

We also changed up the scene a little bit. Rather than the ship being off in the distance I thought "What if he's literally just leaning up against it?". That also allowed for the cockpit details to all be there. As a kid, my favourite part of any plane model I'd do would be detailing out the cockpit with all the lights and widgets and this would allow that. The scarf is also extended and more flowing. That's again a bit of a nod to the Ibasetta Pelican graphic but also another Sci Fi reference. Can anybody guess that one?

I have to say, this is cool for me. As the artist, I just GO, GO, GO and never get to sit back and check out the process. I would send off these updates to Matt each night when I was finished working on it and the next time I looked at it, within 10 minutes it has changed so many times the last still wold be lost. Very cool to see the progress.......

So! Continuing along....

Here you can see some more of the layout roughed in. In this early version he's wearing shorts. The shell toed Adidas shoes are dropped and he's still wearing long sleeves. The background shows the desolate desert environment he's found himself in.

In order to get some progress going we decided to leave the Antennae issue alone for a while. Here you can see we changed him up from having long sleeves to short sleeves and he's wearing big baggy pants. To further emphasize that 90s vibe, we have him wearing pumas. You can see the awesome level of detail Jason was able to put in there and see the actual PUMA logo. Also got the classic "Don't Panic!" title of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy that every good spaceman must carry in the glove compartment.
