That's the one Steve! The recipe that guy (Ed Wort) has posted for everyone has won him awards in various competitions around TX...it is GOOD stuff. I've got 2 batches fermenting right now...the longer it sits, the better. What's also great about it, is you don't have to worry about what temp. you ferment at- room temperature is just fine!
(that is a cool forum for those interested in brewing btw- TONS of info...if anyone joins for the heck of it, look me up- I'm ODP (Ol' Dirty Plastered) |

Good stuff.
My Dad's into the idea of making apfelwein. I'd like to make it here, but we lack any warm space - it'd have to be in the garage and it gets proper cold there this time of year. |

From the bowels of Skullandbones...
This was the oldest home-brewed beer thread I could find, so I'm bumping it.
I made a pretty kickass pale ale recently. It's a hand-me-down family recipe dating from Prohibition that I spruced up with some homegrown hops and a cheater's barrel aging (barrel chunks put into the fermenting bucket).
My father-in-law has a full 5 gallon brewing kit...well, actually 2. He bought one for me for Christmas a few years ago, and misplaced it in the basement, and over time, he's pilfered parts from the spare kit. So, he's got the ability to do two 5 gallon batches at a time.
In addition to my wet-hopped, barrel-aged pale ale, he did the same barrel aging and wet hopping to an amber ale kit.
I've also played around with a 2-gallon experimental batch of spruce beer with a Mr. Beer kit that I got from a buddy. The recipe I used combined one from the commander of British armed forces in North America with one from Benjamin Franklin, so it was a weird, very primitive beer. It came out fully carbonated, as in the caps "popped" like they should've, but was flat as a pancake when you poured it into a glass.
Dollar for dollar, it costs me about $20 to do 50 bottles...my FIL's beer costs between $30 and $50 for the same 40-50 bottles, but he buys premade, prepackaged kits that are nearly idiot-proof and usually come with any specialized hardware that you'll need. |
