Skateboard ramp company celebrates recent acquisitions, tenth anniversary
American Ramp Co. has grown quickly in 10 years, and company officials hope two recent acquisitions will mean even more growth.
Owners Nathan Bemo and Daman Schuber, along with company employees and members of the Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, had a ribbon-cutting last week at their expanding Joplin manufacturing plant. The ceremony also was in honor of the company’s 10th anniversary.
The company manufactures ramps, rails and platforms favored by athletes of extreme sports, such as skateboarding and in-line skating. It also designs and builds skate parks for municipalities and other groups.
About four months ago, American Ramp acquired Solo Ramps, a Canadian company that specializes in prefabricated concrete ramps.
ARC also recently acquired a competing business, Sk8parks International.
Before the Solo acquisition, American Ramp’s product offerings were made mostly of steel, wood and composites, said Jim Moss, chief executive officer. That meant the company was at a disadvantage when it came to serving clients who wanted concrete products.
“We were getting about five bids a week for concrete parks, and all we could do was send bid alternates,” Moss said. “This acquisition opens up a whole new segment of the market for us. We can now give clients the only product we didn’t have access to before.”
Bemo said that as skateboarding has grown from a hobby to a sport, the company has grown, too.
“Before, skating was just a fun thing to do,” he said. “Now, people are making a good living at it, and parents are more encouraging to let their kids experience it.”
Bemo started the company in the garage of his Webb City home. Since then, it has occupied two downtown locations and now is located in a 36,000-square-foot building in the 600 block of McKinley Avenue in Joplin.
But room is being made for the Solo concrete manufacturing operation. ARC is adding about 16,000 square feet of space to its operation, and Moss said Canadian jobs from Solo also will be brought to Joplin.
American Ramp has built skate parks locally and around the world, including in Neosho and at The Bridge in Joplin. It is on track to complete 220 parks at the end of this year.
Last year, the company built about 130 parks and made almost $12 million. It employs about 80 people.
Moss said local municipalities are one of the company’s key markets, and that the recent acquisitions should pay big dividends in the future.
“We have already seen a lot of interest,” he said. “The more we can diversify and open up our market, it means only good things.”
