As someone who didn't start skating regularly until my late 20s and who has almost always worn a helmet, I don't see what the big deal is.
But out of curiosity, you guys who have been skating decades longer than I, is anti-helmet sentiment more about:
1) Comfort (or lack thereof)
2) Style (or lack thereof)
or
3) Rules (skating is a sport/activity that was born out of breaking them and having to live by someone else's flies in the face of that)
If it's comfort, I'll tell you, I bought a Bern helmet and it never gets hot and sweaty like the Protecs and others that use thick foam padding. I forget it's even there even on the hottest days.
If it's one of the other reasons I understand to a degree, but am too old and talentless myself to drop in w/o one. |

If I were strictly a street skater I'd probably be unhappy about a helmet rule. |
