I slammed and twisted my back in Jan. It hurt like hell for a few days and I had to skip work for almost a week. A month after that I was feeling better, skated again and you guessed it...another three days out of work, lying flat on my butt w/ ice and advil. So now about 10 doctor/physical rehab visits and almost six months it still hurts too much to sit for more than a few hours and I can't skate at all. The best anybody can guess is that I herniated a disc. So now I'm in rehab again and I still can't skate. I am about to go crazy. Anybody else go through anything like this? How long did it take to heal? I have had serious injuries before (even fractures) but nothing has been this frustrating or slow to heal. Any input would be great. |

I have a herniated disc in my lower back. Took about 6-8 months for the pain to go away. I went to rehab and a pain specialist that wanted to give me a shot of cortisone. But I ended up going to a chiropracter and he helped me. Your best bet would be to get an mri to get a better picture of where the problem is. The doctor and chiropracter told me that it would take up to 5 years to completely heal. Mine has been acting up on me lately. It sucks. I feel for you. I know what you are going through. All the best. |

I herniated the disc between my fourth and fifth vertebrae on january 20th of 2002. It took almost six months for the pain to go away. I had to have three cortisone shots into my spine. It was either that or back surgery that would have put me down for close to a year. all I can say is when you feel up to it stretching is the only real answer. alot of percocet and flexorall helps alot also! I feel for you bro!!!

My disc exploded -lyterally. Disc shrapnel from L5-S1 everywhere -including wrapped around and grafted to the nerves.
Had it all dug out, the nerves shaved to free the debri -although the nuero-surgeon missed a chunk of the remaining disc (about 10%) that's still herniated on one side... pretty much sucks.
However, after training hard and tons of therapy, walking and swimming, I'm back on board and sessioning up 5-6 times a week. My back still siezes up, but at least I can skate now. I was landing 8ft rock and roll board slides the other night.
Can't run-out bails anymore though - too hard on the impact seeing as I'm now missing a disc in my back, but knee sliding works fine.
My advice? Walk - a lot, swim, drop a few pounds and push it - you only live once, might as well enjoy it. |

thats hardcore Slob, keep it up
Jcruz-as far as the back injury...there is a growing opinion that alot of back pain is psychosematic and comes out when youre stressed out. Im not going to speculate on your situation at all because I dont know you or the situation but I figured Id throw that out. If youre interested look into the books by Dr John Sarno.
Hope you feel better soon and get back on board

Thanks for the info guys. Slob- you made me feel much better. It's good to know there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I haven't had an MRI yet, but I will do all I can to avoid any surgery. The PT gave me a list of exercises/stretches to do and they help a little. Can't lose any weight though-I'll disappear! Realcheap-I have heard that about back pain as well. This is definitely different. Although, now that I think about it there may be something to your theory- I just got married three weeks ago. Talk about stress. For the record-ELOPE!
Thanks again guys! |

jcruz - If it's just a herniation (and not a ruptured or exploded disc), you may want to check out a treatment called VAX-D. It's a rather unique, painless and quite effective (like 70%)procedure developed by a Canadian surgeon. It's not cheap though -and most insurance policies don't cover it. But it's definately worth checking out.
Robert Channey M.D.,Assistant Surgeon General of the United States, used VAX-D therapy himself. He'd come up to Canada for the treatment.
Usually takes about 7 treatments.
Check it out HERE.
It's now available world-wide, and I believe The Back Pain Institute in Nashville offers the treatment.
They're located at:

jcruz,
I have a bad disc also. Confirmed by mri.
Chiro worked good for me. For me the ticket it ice, reduces the inflamation and lets it heal. My back gets all knoted up and the tension feeds on itself. Heat doesn't do shit for your back other than make it warm. Got to ice it, twenty min at a time. It's been over a year since I had a big flare up, but when I feel the slighest twinge I run into see the chiro right away and put the ice pack on my back.
That has kept the pain in check and me on my deck. |
