for a home/basement shop, doing mostly waterbased work, how should i dispose of my waste products?

inks and cleaners, can these just go down the drain since its waterbased? as far as reclaiming screens, i plan to have a screen in the my drain to catch the reclaimed emulsion goo, but what about the other stuff?

my wifes pretty worried that this won't be a "green friendly" project.

any tips would be greatly apprceiated.

You should have a County Household Hazardous Waste facility in your area, Yellow pages or Google should direct you to it. I used to liquidate
houses, we would have tons of chemicals, some unknown, find a HHHW in your area, residents of the county dump free!

Just because its waterbased doesnt mean its non-toxic and can go down the drain.
Drink some first, and if you live, then go ahead and put it down the drain.

there shouldn't be a problem putting most stuff down your drain. Unless you live in a time warp and your city doesn't have the ability to clean and filter the cities water, then in that case you can't put anything down the drain.

If you are on a septic system you can't put stuff down the drain because it will clog your septic bed. Ask my friend who didn't believe me and had to replace a $60,000 septic

the reality is that you are sending a cup of emulsion (which is basically non toxic) down the drain with about 2 gallons of water, if you dumped 5 gallons of ink cleaner down the drain you might have a problem. Any terp, laquer or other hot solvents will be a problem. If it's flammable or solvent based you will get a visit from the ministry of the environment. It's easy to find biodegradable cleaners, like really really easy.

The amount of solid waste you will produce will be more worrisome than your water. Tape, paper, more tape, ruined shirts, empty chemical bottles etc . .

If you live in California that rules are probably different, just about every screen printing supply states "Legal everywhere on the face of the planet, but california"

does anybody know anything about a pump system for a basement sink, i have the sink and everything, and the setup shouldn't be too hard, but now that i look at it again, how the hell am i supposed to get that water going up and out. i know there are some basement pump systems for sinks and what not, but not really familiar on what type to get.

Are you trying to get water into the sink, or out? If it's in than get a 55 gallon drum full of water and sink a sump pump in it and use that for a water supply. Or the reverse, put the sump in the washout (with some sort of filter) and then pump the water out into a drain. Otherwise, just run a PVC drain.

I think I might be confused about what you want.

what brand of waterbased ink are you using? I know speedball and TW go down the drain, I don't know about Nazdar since 70% of what they produce is hazardous waste.

ink=speedball

i do have a sump pump in my basement, i was thinking of running the drain to that, i just need a way to get the water out of the basement.

with the sump pump what i was thinking was just running a pvs drain to it, and letting it sit a bit over the drain, that way i could make a screen cap to it, and any bits of emulsion or anything that runs out would be caught and not go down the drain, i could just unfasten it and empty that into the trash.

all i'm looking to do is some posters, some wood pieces, and the occasional shirt. no massive runs of anything.
