Is there any enamel or something to apply to the side of a deck to protect it from moisture and keep the plies from seperating?

It likely won't delam. However, you can seal it with waxjust rub a candle or curb wax into the dent.

I "seal" my self-made decks with spar urethane varnish. It's waterproof and available in either gloss or satin. Should be available at any hardware store or paint store.

A lot of us us Polycrylic instead of spar varnish these days. I've got a few cans of varnish left that I may never use because the polycrylic dries more durably and doesn't yellow. If you really want to do a quick job, you can get in in aerosol, of course. It's a MinWax product, in the paint/stain aisle...
