I cant really think of any other ideas skateboarding related or not. Oh and I was thinking to have a small selection of snowboard stuff.
Any ideas? Thanks
scuzzo84, it's good that you are thinking ahead. It's a serious question that you definitely need an answer for before you head into business. Maybe eBay sales to get you through? It's really hard to say depending on your particular area. What works for me won't necessarily work for you. The slow months in my area are May, June, July so it's a bit different.
As far as snowboards...don't do it. If you are just going to dabble, it will show and you won't get the sales that you would if you were hardcore into it. You may make the occasional sale, but it wouldn't really be worth it unless you are bringing something to the game that the big boys aren't already doing. A nod to auruagreg, the money would be better spent on shoes. |

Zig we have the same slow months! I guess it was too hot there like it was here and the kids families were all spending money on vacations. Our Summer months sucked but it has picked back up now. I am looking into a place big enough to have an indoor park like they have in Greenville (No Name Skatepark) that is the only way to go. There are a few old grocery stores but I think the overhead will out price the money made on Skate fees. I have recently heard of some discussion to make an old Wal-Mart into several smaller rentals all under one roof that seems do-able as long as the Fire Marshall's codes don't put the brakes on it. I would like to have it professionally built by Hazard construction or someone like that so there is minimal risk of it being under engineered. We are lucky in South Carolina because the laws are in the favor of the park owner as long as the rules are posted and the waiver is signed. I think it would be profitable if done right because you will kick butt when it's raining, too hot, too cold or too many cops hasseling the street skaters.
That is my eventual goal here.
Now back on topic I have learned not to bank on certain brands what's hot today will sit on the racks next week so I always keep a wide variety of items in the store and try to have things for the whole family everything from stickers and hoodies to the little softgoods that you wouldn't think anybody would buy. I have had Dads impulse buy old school style boards to "relive it" and show the boys how to do it. To Moms wanting to pick up a gift for someones kid who "likes Skateboards".
It's also time to stock up on completes and mark them up slightly to move'em out. I can always preach the benefits of a real skateboard over a "Wal-Mart" skateboard. I usually have a broken Wal-Mart truck or some pvc wheels that I use as props to preach the "safety" of the real thing. The completes are very sellable once you tell them they can always upgrade later if little Billy wants to stick with it.
Then we all have those "stale" decks and wheels that nobody will touch, build completes with those I use a pro model/name brand deck and a mix of either blank wheels/raw name brand trucks or cheaper trucks(core/industrial) and price point wheels to get them out of there.
I got some good advice a while back and that was to go up 2.00 on decks and throw in the griptape. I use mini logo as the "shop grip" and if they want Mob, Jessup or whatever else it is a $5.00 upgrade. That was some of the best advice I have gotten so far it seems to work for CCS with the upgrade charges and it is working for us too, we come out about $3.00 ahead on the deal and we have the mini-logo for the next deck we sell. |

Just close down for a couple months in the winter, board up the windows, and light the fucker up.
Do it right and it could get you through the next winter too. |

dude why dont you just make money online. I mean, this is the internet after all. There is so many things you can do. You can flip domain names. check out http://www.namepros.com for advice or you could also get into affiliate marketing. http://www.richkits.com is very helpful for learning the tricks and loopholes. You could learn Google adsense or adwords. Its free. http://www.adsense.com or host a website for real cheap somewhere like http://www.dreamyhost.com or http://www.hostgator.com and make sure that the content you put on the website is something that pays well (credit cards, lawyers, how to make money). But most of all I liked the idea someone said about selling rocks. |
