Um the bertleman slide was not created by Larry bertleman it was an emulation of his turns done on a skateboard. I'm not positive who came up with that. It could be those zephyr kids but It could have very likley been some unknown who gains no credit.

Cliff colman created the slide glove in the 70's and did these bert tuns at speed creating the coleman slide However Around the same time Cliff was creating his coleman slides some whacky Japanese fellow had done something similar and was now showing it to the brazilians. Thus Brazilian slides don't derive from the coleman at all.
(think knees in a A frame as opposed to the drop knee.)

The Name of the Japanese fellow is unkown. I have a friend who is writing a book about the history of certaint aspects of skateboarding (Downhill Freestyle being one of them). He is currently searching for this japanese guy. I'll let you know if we find out any more.

Not according to Cliff, Paul.

Some unknown Japanese dude? Sounds like a whole lot of manufactured and remanufactured legend.

Regardless, in North America and most of Europe, Coleman was the primary inspiration due to both magazine and media coverage and Cliff's touring all over the world.

Yes, Cliff has educated the Northern hemisphere about slide gloves as he invented it. There was however another guy who came up with the idea at nearly the same time.
Speak to the brazilians that have been skating slide for 20+ years or so.
Sergio for example will tell you what I have written. And if you watch the top brazilians you will see very little if any coleman influence.

Have you even spoken to cliff about it?

Since this topic is about the history of slide in general not just the histotry within north america I figured I would add this. Especially considering Clif influence has had a more significat influence on the sport of downhill racing than it has on the downhill freestyle/slide world, up until recently that is. Freestyle slide is a brazilian thing it has been for nealry 30 years. It evolved from knowledge that was passed on in the 70's. Go check out some brazilian blog sites (any one speak portuguese?)

I'm not discrediting cliff in any way he is a freind of mine and one of the most inspirational skaters I have ever met. He has done more for the sport than any one I have ever heard of.

um ...yes it was!

he just didnt call it that. tony alva coined the phrase. [or was it stacy?]

check skateboarder mag, [1970 something]...he was riding "wallos" in hawaii with flip-flops on his hands. [c'mon slob-air,you should know this] the bottom line is...people that werent around when it happened [regardless of what it is] tend to make up history so it fits their own bullshit story to look like they know what their talking about when they dont. research doesnt count unless its done correctly and thoroughly, not just untill you satisfy your own belief.

who cares anyway. [insert photo of me doing a "bert"]
