This show on discovery looks intense. They follow a group up everest in one of the roughest seasons ever on the mountain. Must be a pretty amazing feeling once you get to the summit.
I'm into risk taking but seriously, Everest scares me, cant wait to see the show |

You should totally read "Into Thin Air" by John Krakauer.
He was on everest during the 1996 season when people were dropping like flies, and he tells the story in this book.
Super good book. Highly recommended. |

amazing book.
Tioem if you like that then get Into the Wild which is also a worthy read. The first time I went backpacking in Alaska I took a small plane to see Denali and we flew around the bus from Into the Wild. |

Yeah I read that one too, and definately liked it as well. That's cool, you saw the bus! Nutty story for sure. |

Also check out Goran Kropp's book Ultimate High. The guy biked from Stockholm to Nepal with all his supplies on the bike, carried all his own equipment to base camp, climbed Mt. Everest alone without bottled oxygen, and rode his bike home to Stockholm. All this at the same time as the events of Into Thin Air were happening. Awesome book.

I will definitely pick that up. The 1996 season was crazy, i think the season for the show Everest was the second most dangerous, i think eleven people died climbing that season

Goran Kropp did Everest the way it should be done. Amazing.
Addicted to Danger is another great book - by Jim Wickwire. |

I saw a special and sorry if I double the references in the posts above ...
The one I'm thinkin' about recalls the story of a climber left in the death zone ... he was believed to be dead or, at least, not able to be rescued ...
He was found by a second group of climbers who ended up deciding whether to save the guy or reach the summit ... knowing they might never get the chance to climb it again ... |

I've been addicted to Everest stuff ever since I read Into Thin Air back in the late 90's. 10 years later I'm still totally intrigued by everything these people go through to get to the top of the world. I follow the climbers via the internet every April/May. I can't wait for this new reality show to start (Nov. 14th right?).
Have any of you seen that National Geographic documentary of the team from '98 that found Mallory?
I've also read Into the Wild....cool book...amazing story...sad ending. I'm definitely gonna have to pick up that Kropp book. I've never even heard of that guy. |
