i need help finding the right wheel for my type of riding. just got back into boarding after a long sabbatical. they just repaved all the streets that i used to ride so i'm stoked to get back into it. looking for something that really sticks on the steeps(we're talkin up to 15% grades) but can transition to gs and carve. don't need big speed, carviness and grip more important. in my former life i skated on the orange/red kryptonics(circa 1979)and they were killer. anything like them anymore? the guy at the boardshop talked me in to a set of sector 9 79mm 78a. they're fast but break loose waaaay to easy.
any suggestions |

a few possibilities:
some Abec11 Gumballs in 75a
or
3dm Avalons (68mm) or Avila's (76mm) in softer durometers (76 maybe?)
or Retro 70mm
or some Abec11 Grippins (70mm) if you want something centerset... |

| Abec 11 flashbacks are based on the old Kyrpto 70mms. I run 81a on some pretty rough surface with good results. New krptos might be good enough for you ( I dont like them myself, to mushy ). 3DM, PPS and Gravity are all making good softer wheels. |

| thanks for the info...another question, how do the centerset wheels change the performance and turnabilty? |

they don't , necessarily....
wear characteristics are going to be different and the track width when set up will be different, more depends on the individual wheel.....
one thing to look for, though, in a traction wheel, is the sharp or squared edges-- radiused edge wheels are generally a whole lot easier and likelier to slide ...
Try some of The Abec 11 Grippins, they are shaped so that they kinda flex and keep as much surface area in contact with the ground as possible.. i don't think they will be as fast as some of the 76mm wheels; but the traction on them is excellent, especially in the 75a or 78a ..
One other thing to consider- your stance, weight ditribution etc may also be contributing to loss of traction.... |

| Met a guy at a park in North Van (land of multiple bowls, snakeruns, and epic downhill suicide bombs into traffic) that went to the local store and asked for the softest wheels they had...they gave him some 54mm Black Labels. 101a by my guess. |

i dont longboard but the wheels that i use for my regular board and what i like to do downhill with are the 64 mm reissued G-bones by powell peralta.
