THM and I had our two year (cotton!) anniversary today--well, technically yesterday...

Anyway, we had a badass dinner tonight.

Beef carpaccio with lightly fried goat cheese, parsley, and white truffle oil. I had never eaten it before, but I had the reins on selecting the appetizer tonight. It was sublime. Like eating live butterflies. Fucking outstanding.

I had the duck breast with a port-cherry reduction (can't remember what kind of cherries--whatever...); haricots verts; and a crepe filled with duck confit, onions, and morels. I don't care for fat on anything besides duck, lamb, and bacon. The duck fat was scrumptious, the verts were tasty and felt as though I was squeegeeing my teeth, and I could have made a meal out of a few of the crepes alone.

THM had the coq au vin on a bed of some kind of risotto and a side of mashed potatoes with white truffles. The coq (haha) was good, but I definitely preferred my duck. The mashed potatos were addictive.

We had a pear and almond cake with a scoop of goat cheese ice cream topped with truffle-infused honey. The pear and almond were a strange but vaguely workable pairing, but the goat cheese ice cream was very tart. I think extreme cold brings out the tang in it. The honey was slightly noticeably different in a manner similar to the woody sweetness of dry Honey Nut Cheerios. I think that it would have had a much stronger taste if there was more drizzled over the plate.

I drank Zacapa rum on the rocks, THM had Rain vodka tonics. We also had some sort of sparkling water. THM ordered it, so I was stuck drinking icky water all night. I actually found this sparkling water less odious and bitter than the others she drinks, but I was still a far cry from pleased with the water for the meal.

We had some coffee and then headed off to a cozy little dive bar up the street...

If any of you can tell me anything about preparing beef carpaccio, I'd love to hear it. Bucket and Zodes--I'm looking at you...

I do not like red meat/beef in general, but beef carpaccio is a gift from Heaven! I actually LOVE it. It is great on pizza too!

Anyways...sounds like a good night TGM.

@TGM: you salty dog, you...

wow, what a tasty repast on such a "joy"ous occaision!

there are several carpaccio recipes out there - raw, seared, w/ proscuitto,
w/ arugala, ...

I prefer pressing coursely (fresh) ground pepper in to a 6 oz. angus or kobe filet - wrap in plastic, freeze for 30 min. Unwrap, slice uber thin, then shave off nice thin slabs of parm - reggiano over the slices - drizzle some high qual EVOO and either a few drops of fresh lemon juice OR (even better) a few drops of high qual (OLD) balsamic vinegar over --- swill a few martinis and you're all good.

Congrats to you and THM for 2 years of wedded bliss.

Lush hit it on the head with the Carpaccio method. Avoid the hammered out stuff. Or, just send it back.
