Thanks Skinny,
I saw that pump. They must be using that to run both those presses. I was also thinking that they are probably using something like a log splitting hydraullic since they have such a big gap inbetween there molds.
I talked with a guy today about a pump, he said he has one available that will automatically re adjust itself to keep pressure so it doesn't have to constantly run. He said it was around $1900. It was 1/2 hp with 5000 psi.
Seems like quite a bit. I've seen used electric over hydraulic with twice as much power for $600. But they didn't have that handy little option.

ok, I had a change of plans. I spoke to a hydraulic specialist and he said the best way to set up a press that holds the right amount of pressure and is solid is to utilize a standard industrial pump like a small pressure compensated axial piston pump, an accumulator, and a pressure switch, and an off the shelf cylinder that will produce the force with about three thousand pounds of oil pressure.
I have a few questions/verfications if some of you have answers:
How long do you hold the skateboards in the press? I've heard anywhere from 45 min to 2 hours.
How much pressure per square inch? I understand that it should be 200 lbs of pressure per square inch.
How many boards is it safe to stack. I read that 3-4 should be max, anything more than that and the form doesn't take as good of shape.
Thanks,

Your in the right psi range. Technically 150-250 more and you will crack veneer.
Try 2 decks at first..... |

enerpac hydraulics.
10000 psi system
50 ton cylinder.
the foot pump has a built in regulator and resevoir
get a lockout valve.
pump up to full pressure,
close the valve.
do not open for 1-2 hours.
it will hold the pressure as long as you have no leaks.
you can put a pressure gauge on the inside of the lockout valve,
and check that the pressure remains.
or get 2- 20 ton bottle jacks,
pump them up to full pressure.
it all works. |

Joe barely posts on here, but when he does they are always good....
This is the info you were looking for, as I said before I don't use hydraulics.
The one caution I would state is the pressure leaks. When I tried it out, I switched because I did want to dig up the ram, and other components. I dropped the idea and developed another method. |

Hey Joe,
Thanks for the advice. I was looking into an enerpac 50 ton a few days ago but I didn't purchase it because a guy out west offered to put a package together for what I need........just have to see if the price is right.
Do you have any suggestions for a 10,000 psi system?
Thanks for the links Skinny.....I was having a bit of trouble finding a pump like those. The only ones I seemed to find were the portable ones. Looks like good prices too.
