I am going to start this venture again with silk screening and I don't want to be discouraged again like the last time. I gave up pretty easily the last time I tried this becuase of the crappy materials i used, such as a cheap ass dick blick 1 color screen press, wood screens (that warped and bent badly) and of course the messy as clean up (there has to be an easier way). So to go about this better this time can I have some advice from the experts on these here forums. I know I need the following (keep in mind this Is a very small home operation) I am going to start off with a 1 color press till I get the hang of things so this Is what I am thinking I need (by the way I am printing shirts) This Is all I know that I am sure right now.........................

- 1 color press with good registration
- Aluminum frames (I am thinking a 110 mesh for general work?)
- QX1 Emulsion

In know I need more then this but I wanted to know from you guys the best way to go about the rest of the stuff I need. I am on somewhat of a budget but I want to minimize the headaches along the way too so i don't want to go super cheap either. I am going to start by printing dark inks on light shirts becuase I don't want to get into the whole black t-shirt thing yet (becuase I have read the posts on here) until I know what I am doing with the light shirts.

build a 1 colour press, as registration isn't really important for 1 colour stuff. Jiffy Hinges and some wood, there's a guy on here who built his own stuff.

What kind of inks are you using?

you are gonna neeed a pressure washer to clean your screens.

I started out the exact same way. My set up was a old table, a pair of jiffy clamps and a hand made platen, 2 alluminum screens with 62 mesh (thats metric size...), 3 water based ink colors, emulsion, one scop coater, one squeegee and a hot air blower for flashing. Printed 1 color on light colored and black shirts for a year and a half and saved untill I bought a real press. With this set up I could print as easily in my garage as in my living room and the prints came out as good as the ones I make with my 6 color press. The worst part is really the washing and reclaiming of the screens but with a little practice and organisation you can even do it in your bath tub if you have too, many times it looks harder and messier than it really is.

I have a pair of juffy hinges but with a screen attached to that and not being able to go up and down on the height of the clamps because there is no adjustment, will I have any registration problems?

I'm not sure if I'm understanding your question right but I think you're talking 2 diferent things. First if you're going to do 1 color prints there is no registration to worry about, thats only with 2 or more colors, if you're talking about being able to move the screen in order to place the image on the right place over the shirt, when working with jiffy clamps you just have to measure the screen to see where the image needs to be on the shirt and then burn the screen with the film placed exactly there, no problem. About height if you're talking about regulating off contact distance you can set different heights by just taping some coins under the screen. Hope this helps.
