Spiked wood?

My manufacturer told me about wood that lasts longer and is only saved for their big clients pros. It was either Spiced wood or Spiked wood. Is this wood really better. He explained it to me as a veneer in the center of the board, that was split 70 / 30 or 60 / 40. Is this stronger? He didn't offer it to me, and I didn't ask for them. Which is stronger, the split veneer in the middle, or all whole venners, to me the whole would be better but I was just curious. Thanks,
