They just made me a special 28" board that I'm real stoked on, it was a good price too. They have some nice longboards like the Swift 40: concave with kick tail, made in the US by hand with excellent customer service
this thing is SICK....
I've got a 42" Custom Subsonic that they make for Milehighskates. Great board, SOOOOO fun to ride. |

Those boards are nice but not what he's looking for. The retro rider is not a speedboard. And it has a kick tail, that would make it better for rougher terrain. I reccomend wider trucks because the board is more of a carving type board ( Yes I know you can have a lot of fun carving on a subsonic.) Wider trucks give a stable surf type feel. The wheels that the Retro rider comes with are 70mm thats a good all around size until you get used to it.
My sick carving board
underside
Then when i have a need for speed
Because the Deathbox has a kicktail I can go from curb to parkinglot at a high rate of speed and also transverse large cracks in sidewalks, railroad tracks and stunned groms. If you have never ridden a longboard then your better off with the Retro rider. Ride it, get used to it then twick it till it's sick! |

I was thinking of this style of Subsonic:
Its got a kicktail and is concave and cambered. |

That does look sweet.....thats the one I zeroed in on after you mentioned subsonic.
I guess I made a decent choice considering I didnt do much homework...which I normally do. Homework always seems to mean more $$ in the end....
Im gonna ride it....cant go wrong there.
Thanks for all the input. |

Well...ive spent some time on the board. Very cool, lots of fun. I have to say it doesnt turn very well.
Based on my short board experience some much softer bushings are in order at a minimum.
The risers do suck, theyre very soft gel types. I had to tighten the bolts up to get the trucks to stop moving and by the time I did the risers were smashed about half theyre original size. Ive always hated gel risers anyway....so theyre getting tossed.
Does anyone have some input ont the angles of the risers?? Such as which orientation does what? Quicker turn, slower turn....etc. Im gonna play with them but thought id ask.
I think the deck itself is very cool, it flexes pretty good with me on it ...im 160...but maybe a little more flex would be nice. |

Wedge risers are easy to set up. If you set them up with the high ends on the inside and the low ends towards the nose and tail your board will turn better (less stable). The roads in the Poconos (where I live) are "tar and chip" witch is pretty rough. So I use soft wedge risers with both low ends forward. This gives me a quicker turn on the front truck, more stable on the rear and most important, with your trucks wedged this way with "soft risers" they will absorb shock better. When RadPad first came out with wedge risers that was the idea. On my pool and park boards with wide trucks I wedge the low ends facing out so they turn better. |

Homer80,
Thanks. Thats how they were from the box...small end out...so thats good to know. Our roads are the same here, tar and chips. So maybe the gel risers are the way to go. I have hard plastic risers on my short old school boards.....but they dont spend any time on the roads...sidewalks and parking lots mostly.
After more time the bushings seem to be softening up and the bearings breaking in. I think ill still go with some aftermarket softer bushings, and maybe eventually some Randal trucks. My son and I had a blast on it last night cruising the sidewalks.
Looking forward to more time on it.....I think im hooked..... |
