Most of the people in here have an idea about how they work....
I have seen them being applied.
You can, if you ask them enough, get Madrid skateboards to e-mail you a password to see there promotional video on the machines that they sell.
They make nice machines, but they are at least double the price of a comparable unit. Also they make you buy the transfers from them.
Joe at Penns is doing the smartest thing right now... hes building his own!!
That fuckin rules.
The transfers themselves can be screened flat by yourself, however you have to invest in mylar, inks, and then the images have to be backwards.
The do it yourself process here is not unheard of.
Powell screens their own heat transfers for their S.B. Ca. made stuff.
If it is tip to tail prints you are after......Im on it. |

you can get the roller machines from china for like $6,000. The transfers dont cost much at all. I think there is a setup charge of like $30 a color, but if you do cmyk your str8.
I got some sample from this company but never had them applied so I dont know of the quality...I was just curious much like yourself.
PM me if you want their contact info or if you have some questions. |

the transffers can be printed on a nice ink jet printer. they are similar to a iron heat transfer for a t-shirt but you just do it to a board.

Hector,
I could tell you one place that you could get a peek at the process....
A while back a show called "made in america" on the history channel did a tour of the skate one factory.
They showed one of their graphics being made, on transfer mylar.
Get a copy of the show.
The truth is the actual method of making transfers is easy. The materials are quite spendy though, mostly because you gotta buy a roll of the mylar.
The inks are different too they are not like regular printing inks.
If you do get the materials, the printing is basic flat printing...but reversed image printing.
As for the rollers, the best transfer machines use temperature adjustable rollers, the rollers are soft enough to conform to the concave of a deck.
Some fancier machines have "stop bars" that stop the deck and release the roller in case the application is screwed up.
All of this is mounted in a press style unit. the decks are fed through.
I hope you do get something going with this, it does make money in the long run. -Milt |
