We're going to be making a shop DVD of my sponsored skaters, and they all want to use certain songs. I'm a little leary of just using them without permission. I know there has to be some legal crap with using other peoples music - but does anyone know how to get permission to use music?

I can't answer your question, but what about getting a local label or a few local bands to donate a few tracks?

Didn't all the Santa Cruz films in the late '80s have mostly SST bands on the sound track? I assume they worked out some sort of agreement.

I'd say go for it. Small shops have been doing it for years. If circulation is low and kept within your community, then I don't see why it would be an issue.

If you want to make 1000 copies and sell them online, then that may be a different story.

I would just take the same approach as downloading music. Stay away from mainstream stuff like Metallica, The Beatles, Bitchey Spears, and other MTV crap. Some old punk rock and underground hip hop and you'll be alright.

Keep the cuss words to a minimum too because you don't want to end up in trouble with parents; like the porno-skate shop from another post.

yeah - that shop selling porn! can you believe it?

I planned on keeping the video pretty clean anyway.

I dont think the video will be a huge mainstream thing anyway. Just a little promo (porno - haha) for the shop and the team.

I already tried contacting the Rx Bandits - no response yet.

heres the loophole i know this from being a dj and recording mixes.

if you are NOT selling them then its all good just mark them "for promotional use only" and provide a complete track listing
if you are selling them mark the package like so "dvd inside is free! the case is 10 bucks" still mark them for promotional use only and still provide complete track listing

this should keep your ass clear

lol that was just an example you can get creative with it...
like a 15 dollar pack of hardware with a free video...

just make sure on the actual disk it is marked "for promotional use only not for sale" and include complete track info for each song used
