Well, seeing how I've been lurking here for quite some time, and seeing how I started posting recently, I figured that it was time for a proper introduction. I didn't notice any "who are you, etc." threads, and since there seems to be quite a few friendly folks around here I figured thatt it might be a good idea to start one.
I started skating back in 1985 when I moved from Texas to Florida. My parents picked me up one of those crazy Variflex boards with the dragon on the bottom of it (Vindicator perhaps?), and I was on my way. After my older sister managed to finally score a boyfriend he noticed that I was riding a crap deck and gladly handed over his Skull and Sword that was outfitted with a set of Rat Bones and Tracker Ultralites. After that it was a while before I bought a new deck and moved on to a full face Roskopp.
It wasn't until high school that I started taking skating somewhat seriously and bought another board; it was all over from that point on. I got a part time job to buy decks, and continued to skate with friends through high school until I moved to Orlando in 1994. I was sponsored briefly by a local surf shop (which I think occured because they wound up sponsoring all five of us), but never really had the drive to do anything but have fun.
Skating up and around Orlando was fun. Rampage had closed down before I had moved up, so I settled for sessions over at the Badlands park in Casselberry and occassion runs over to the SPOT. This lasted up until I moved back south in December of 1998, but skating soon hit the back burner as work and school took over again. I had always wanted to start skating again, but my friends had long such abandoned the hobby, so one man sessions were never quite fun.
In March of 2004 I got the itch again and picked up a new complete down at the local shop, got a couple of the boys back together and hit the grommet infested Vans Park in Orlando. I wandered over the 6' mini and started relearing what I had lost. One of my buddies joined me, then the other. The oldest of the group (33) dropped in, hit a backside grind, ran out of it and broke his ankle. We carried him off, called his wife (who was out shopping), and she carted him off. My other buddy (who's ironically a local police officer now) pulled his pads off and took a seat, and I hit the outside course for a little carving and fun, and that was that.
A couple of months later I was ecstatic to find out that two of my other pals had moved back to town and were still skating. Unbeknownst to me one of the guys I ferried around back in the day had managed to make a name for himself in Vero Beach. Lewis had cashed in all his chips and started a skateshop called "New Blood Skates" in Vero Beach, Florida, and had been doing quite well. We went up and visited him quite a few times, but skating hit the back burner again when the summer kicked in and boat days and beer proved to be too dominating for us. We hung out on the boat four days a week and continued to grow old and fat while having a blast.
When 2005 came about I was amped to start skating again. Street skating was fun back in the day, but I was really itching for some ramps again. We've been hitting the Vans Park a couple of times a month and manage to pull a couple of other old timers with us each time we go. However after doing some research I found that the Orlando city park looks much more promising, so it seems like we'll be heading there next weekend to draw some lines and have good times.
So, long story short is, I'm another old guy with a master's degree in education that still enjoys skateboarding, good friends, and nostalgic deck collecting. If you live in the Central Florida area and would like to hit a park with us some time give me a shout via email.
Thanks to the guys who started this forum, and thanks to the guys who have been friendly as hell so far.
