I always thought they were part of the wing.

That's what I don't get out of this whole discussion.....there is only one eatable part of a chicken.......the white meat!!! Breast , tenders, etc....but white meat only thank you very much. Now as for Buffalo wings, what part of the Buffalo do those come from?
