I've been wrestling with this question quite some time and I'd appreciate any insight/ opinions. Is there anyway I can make a modest income with them? Please let me elaborate before answering...
I love skateboards so much that it's all I do really; if not doodling an idea for a design or graphic, then tinkering with them. I like taking them apart, fiddling with different hardware variations, learning more truck geometry and on and on. I especially love, art-wise, woodburning on bare decks and oil painting them.
(I've got parts and decks laying ALL around the gargage and the house, and luckily my husband is pretty darn understanding about it.)
I've done some art on skateboards, but nothing extraordinary at all. I don't think many people would pay $100 for a deck I worked on many, many hours when they can get a really nice screened one by a professional artist for half that, even if mine is a 'one-of-a-kind'.
I'm currently unemployed, so I'm messing around with skateboards ALL the time now!
And it's not just old school either, I enjoy all the different types and eras... talking to the parents about what I think a good starter setup would be, chatting with all the members here on the forum, whatever. I went to the skatepark on my 40th birthday and it was too hot to breathe much less skate, but I enjoyed just hanging out with the groms!
I am a 43 year old gal, not exceptionally fit, never have been able to skate worth a darn, but still love to roll around. And I've never even dropped in yet but long to learn that and vert skating even 'at my age'.
Since I spend a good 10 hours a day obsessing about skateboards, is there anyway to heed this as my life's calling just to make a couple hundred dollars a week??? I do eBay but I don't want to get into that 'discount skateboard' selling racket.
Note that I say modest living, too. I have no inclination to open a shop and haven't got much business sense anyway. I don't think I'm an expert at skateboard history or anything like that either, (but I'm a pretty decent mechanic with them, I think, and love assembling them.)
I'm also not good with computers, so I don't know anything about having a website.
Well okay I rambled long enough. I appreciate all you guys' friendship here on the forum, and I know I seem like a real kook most of the time, so thanks in advance for guidance! (and thanks for taking the time to read all this!) |

Maybe kick around http://www.malakye.com to see if there's anything in the Charlotte area? I imagine that the overwhelming majority of stuff is California-based though.
You could also talk to a few of the product reps around here to see if they have any insight.
I think you might be able to sell a few of your handpainted decks, but I doubt that it would work out to be a way to pay all the bills that way, especially if you put a lot of time into your work. That's one of the million different reasons I decided against restoring anything for money. I'd either be working for $1.00 an hour if I charged $100 per deck, or else it would cost customers $1000.00 if I charged $10 an hour, neither of which is really what anybody wants... |

I was just at a skateboard art show that featured decks that sold (and they did sell!) for anywhere from $200 to over a $1000
These were all one-off unique peices. |

thanks monkey! I'll look at those options.
I would do the hand-painted decks for anything near $6 an hour, but obviously I could not do it for much less...In other words, I don't have delusions of making any REAL money at this,
BUT if I could convince my husband I'm making a small living at it, he'd chill out about me not working full time ...same old story, right? |

thanks Slob, that's encouraging!
I'm willing to really work at the artwork, especially if I could just work here at home rather that some crappy retail job... |

Hey Tina - your passion for skating is truly inspiring. Good luck with whatever you do! Also, I bet a lot of people on this forum would buy a deck you had designed. |
