I just thought I'd share with everyone what the sort of specialty of the local cuisine is around here, and it happens to be an abomination of sorts, but I was curious for folks to throw up (blarf!) some pictures of what their local specialty is, as well as offensively sized portions.
Around here (central Illinois--Bloominton-Normal and Peoria area, mainly), there is a real romance with pork tenderloin sandwiches. Not only are they delicious, but they're ridiculously large.
Here are some crappy cameraphone pics from dinner tonight.
This is me with my Pork T "sandwich" from Schooner's. It cost me an additional $0.25 for an extra bun, and $0.50 for lettuce and tomato under each top bun. The right side of it is a bit curved, but if smoothed out, it would have been a crude circle of about 15" in diameter. They're 3/4" thick. It was cut diagonally down the middle for me, to make the bun portion more accessible with less effort and enhanced graspability. I like mine with mayo and yellow mustard. This cost me $8.70, without tip.
This is THM with her Tenderloin Supreme. It's a tenderloin of roughly the same size as mine, but it comes with melted cheddar and american cheese, sausage, tomato sauce, lettuce, tomatos, and onions all piled on top of it, with sides of sour cream and salsa. It comes sliced into squares, like thin crust pizza. This costs $9.50.
We brought a considerable amount of food home in styrofoam boxes. Finishing half of a T is enough to make you want to shit and die.
So, post some pics and descriptions of your local dishes and/or behemoth foods... |

Where I work, at Sicilian Joes pizza in Crete, IL we have a pizza called "The Tower" Oh do I loathe that filthy beast, it takes me 15 minutes just to prepare it for the oven. Next time I make one i'll shoot a picture and post it on here. The general idea is to create an entire family pasta dinner in pizza form.
a jumbo (18") tower consists of the following:
2 lbs of dough, slathered with garlic butter
roughly 12-16 ounces of pizza sauce,
apx. 1.5 lbs of mostaciolli or spaghetti
8 large meatballs,
10 cups of mozzerella cheese
and 16-20 slices of tomatoes.
The entire pizza after being cooked weighs in anywhere between 5-10 pounds depending on which of us made it, and is about 4 inches tall. I hate this monster, but if you guys are ever in my area, you should come check us out. |

Ha! Every time I think of Rude Dog, I chuckle.
It's a Powell Rat Bones repro.
Amorone--We'll get around to the little monkeys in due time. We're in no hurry...
SMN--I'd be very interested in checking out a Tower sometime. |

THM is cute. How the hell did she end up in her current situation? Poor lass...
@TGM - are your pointing to your package or the plate? I'm not down w/ all that urban gang handsign stuff...
Let's see an upskirt pic w/ that camera phone - not of THM, as she is your bride, but some unsuspecting drunk bitch...no hurry.
...um, got one yet?... |

Some of our other giant pizzas are the Italian sub - dbl thick crust, solid layers of ham, salami, provolone, mozzerella, tomatoes, onion. smaller than the tower, but pretty big. And chicken ranch, oiled dbl thick crust, ranch dressing, garlic, big chunks of grilled fajita chicken strips, cheese, onion, tomatoes and cheddar. I haven't had those yet, but they look and smell awesome. |
