What am I doing wrong?

I went to a skatepark and I keep trying to drop in and I keep falling like crazy.

I tried leaning forward to compensate for your natural instinct to lean back but it just made me topple forward.

I can't do it and I'm getting really frustrated.

Any pointers?

soulds like youre going too far each way. find a comfortable medium balance in between the two.

keep your center of gravity low as well as itll help the first few times.

relax and flow with the ramp. dont try too hard and make it smooth. dont smack the nose down either, that will give you a major bump forward.

I find that maintaining a constant plane within your body really helps.... Try dropping in with your front shoulder, knee, and foot all aligned with one another.... push down (not too hard) and just relax..... it'll come.

Like nearly everything in skateboarding, one key is:

BEND YOUR KNEES

I am a major violator of the principle and it's why even Tony Hawk probably has more style than me, but it's a good principle. When dropping in, I always reach forward with my hand to grab the nose. I don't actually grab it but I think it just makes me center my shoulder over my knee, over my foot like mentioned above. Practice makes perfect and once you engrain that motion in your muscles, you'll never fall again on a drop in. (even if you take 13 years off skating like i did you'll feel comfortable just walking up to the lip and dropping in)

The deeper & steeper the drop, the lower you need to go. I find that on really tough drops, like a vert with pool coping, it helps to do what slim suggests, and also try to level the deck before you totally drop. And you must get low on a vert drop. Loose & low is the key, think of flowing from a standup position to a knees bent position to a crouched on the deck position, then pumping through the tranny.

I think it's much easier to do when you do a flowing motion than when you get all scrunched up and then drop. You are low enough if your chest hits your leading thigh, like you would for a totally compressed carve turn.

Here's how to do it on an itty bitty park ramp:

It is actually a good exercise to just drop off of a curb using that motion, then transfer it to deeper and steeper drop ins. Repetition is key... pretty soon you won't have to worry about a drop in ever again. Unless you are doing some sickness like a badass pool with 5' vert or a huge ramp.

I agree with PG. Bend those knees and keep your weight centered. It's best to start on a smaller ramp so it's less intimidating. Then work your way up. Also, get some good knee pads. Protect yourself so you can skate longer!

I do it like slim. I hold the nose and step up to the edge slap the tail down and go (in one fluid motion). Holding the nose seems to make it more comfortable then just standing straight up. It forces you to have your shoulder over the front trucks.
