Im probably wrong seeing as I dont know crap about making boards, but I thought that they used a wide belt sander. Now Im curious what they use. A routher seems to make a lot more sense. |

From what i have been told it is a trim router with a 1/4" bit. |

You can use a trim router with a quarter round bit but it won't get the area around the bends of the nose and tail. Spindle sanders work for these areas pretty nicely

five points,
i ve been using one of those, but as you say, the edges where the kick of the tail starts, do not come out nicely. If you go to this address
http://www.premiumskateboards.com/pages/boardbeast.html, click on "show me how these boards are made" and got to the 10th picture, you'll see a tabke router of some sort, is this the machine they use for routing, or is it the one they use in frame 11?
Is the only way to do it with a quarter bit or can you also use a half bit?

I'm pretty sure that pic 10 is the cutting the shape of the deck out, pic 11 is using a trim router to get most of it routed/rounded, and pic 12 is the drum/spindle sander to finish up the routing the areas where the trim router did not go.
Right now, I'm experimenting with making a new rounded base for my router, so I can angle it a bit at the nose and tail to route the edges. I'll let you know how it comes out. I douby a 1/2 round bit will work for the router. I think you'll end up chewing up the deck. use a 1/4 round bit.

It's just a matter of finding the right angles then, you have to move the board around a lot to do it nice and clean, right?
do the major woodshops all do this by hand, I find that hard to believe.
Will there be a lot of imperfections after routing?

That's the base of the router. I'm sure yours has one, it might be a bit different looking, but they all have them. That is the part I'm trying to revamp to work with the bends of the board. We'll see. My home made rig works pretty good now, it just takes longer to make a deck. I'm trying to speed it up and keep the quality. I'll let you know how it works.

Tim,
Do you use a 1/4 inch round bit and a flat base right now? If so, how well does that work with the tail/kicknose?
Any pics? |
