I couldnt find the info i was looking for my searching. Basically, i just want to transfer my old VHS footage to DVD. I read a bunch of stuff on DVD home recorders. Someone said just get a $350 unit. Some of the things i have been reading on various reviews.....state that some recorders made copies or DVD's that were unplayable on a wide range of DVD players.
Do I have to spend $500 to $700 on a DVD recorder to get the best playable DVD disk?
Thanks for any help. I dont want to go and just buy a cheap DVD recorder if it will not make copies all my family and friends DVD players wont play.

Don't get a DVD-RAM recorder if you get a standalone. These can only play back DVDs they have written themselves and are unplayable in 99% of other DVD players (I learnt that from bitter experience).
Get yourself a decent capture card and DVD writer/software for your computer, that way you'll have proper control over menus, capture sources etc.
I do it this way and all my DVDs are region free and play in PS2s, portables, everything I have tried it on.

| I have done what you are trying to do. I have a stand alone dvd recorder. I have had it almost year and half. I have transfered all my skate videos to dvd and now they all have dd surround sound 2.0. I did a lot of research before I bought one. Like the guy said before me there are different formats in witch the way it is recorded. DVD-r is the most compatible for. It does not matter how much you spend on a dvd player they can play different formats or just one format. What I did was link to a site and typed in what type of system I have or the person wanting something from me to see if there player will play it. The most common problem people have is not finalizing the disk when done recording on. That is the only reason why the disk will only play in the system you used to make the copy. All I can say is that I have over 105 burned disks with skate videos containing two to four videos on them. An everyone has 2.0 stereo sound. A few of the guys on this forum I have transfered stuff they had to disk and they where inpressed with the quality and sound that it does. So If you have anymore questions send me a message or post.
