I posted this on kookbook earlier today...
The Shred is dead,. Long live the Shred. Fuck Cancer.
Here's some pics of Ed the Shred I shot for the Calgary Herald at the Edmonton show—my camera was, unfortunately, not working properly—likely damaged at an earlier outdoor mud bog of a concert I shot, so most of the pics are, sadly, just utter crap.
I was fortunate enough to meet Ed earlier when Van Halen (The real Van Halen) rolled through Calgary on the 1984 tour—the night ended after helping EVH load up his limo with 12-cases of beer to take back to the hotel with him. He could carry 3 cases under each arm! He was a cool cat—handed me a case to take home.
I learned the guitar tracks on his debut self titled album on a '70s Gretsch Chet Atkins Tennessean that had been loaned to me at a time when I had nothing else to play. The Bigsby wiggle stick on that Gretsch surprisingly did the job in-so-far as mimicking the wang bar histrionics of Ed's Floyd Rose tremelo, it just didnt do it that well. LOL!
I just finished playing as much of the aforementioned self-entitled Van Halen debut album as I could—despite my still healing finger—through a trio of big watt tube amps (Laney Pro Lead, Traynor YBA-1A and a Traynor Special—cranked up to 10!!!
So fun!! So many good memories. Such an incredible player... you'll always be on my play list, Ed. You'll always be a big part of what, how and why I play. Thanks for blowing my mind and rocking me to the core.
Rest In Peace and rock Heaven and Hell and everywhere above, below and in between. You'll be missed but never forgot.
Shitty scanner too. |
