I brought up this post in the past, but it needs to be readdressed.
I believe the skateboard deck collecting community should be on par and integrated with the PSA/DNA grading system. Just as sports cards and comic books are given a number denoting the condition and is cataloged and photographed into an online searchable database, the same should be done with skateboards....
Im not saying take your skateboards and put it in a big acrylic box, im saying PSA/DNA will inspect, grade, and catalog your deck for its database of condition based on only decks with no hardware just decks. It will apply a small numbered holographic sticker to the top of the deck, you won't see it.
It will describe the condition in detail on the time of inspection and be sent back to you. If the deck is altered or damaged buy the owner since the time of inspection when trading hands, The buyer can look up the PSA/DNA number on the database to compare the condition issues.
This is a fool proof system and will establish a real price point and grading system for the actual higher tier decks we collect and will be accessible for everyone just like fine artwork does with a condition report given by an auction house.
One will know the quantity of that deck in graded circulation and the value and will establish itself as a mainstream asset class and further the. collecting community. |

Ok,
Coins, stamps, notes, sport cards, etc are graded on condition.
I kinda get it but,
*who grades the deck?....(who is king grader)
*do you just send them a photo.....(that’s dubious)
*do they drive/fly to your house?.......(for free $$$)
*do you mail the deck to them?.....(transit damage)
*how much will this cost?......(internationally)
*how do you reference a previously ‘graded’ deck’s condition?...(send it back to king grader)
Nice concept though........dunno if it works for skateboards......there is so much emotion involved in “the value” of a particular deck.
Are you trying to standardise the value of a deck so others can reference its price point?......or.......have a reference hologram that checks if the deck got 2 scratches on it since it’s last owner, therefore rendering said deck devalued?
Help me......my brain is hurting again.

This sort of thing happens in record collecting but there is a big degree of subjective interpretation. I works best when the majority of buying and selling is dealer based and the dealer wants to build a reputation so they grade carefully.
Skateboard collecting is still a collector - collector activity without the dealer middleman. How long befofe that changes?
Once professional dealers get involved in skateboards, so grading will be inevitable. |

I've performed as a "grader" for a few members seeking to get proper recompense for their loss from a insurance company. |

Yeah that’s already happened......look at re-issue flippers, look at Facebook, they are money mongering kooks with no idea about the intrinsic, historical and emotional level involved in skateboard collecting.......THEY are just in it for the coin.
NO SOUL.
Fuck ‘professional’ dealers.

That’s great.....we need assessor’s to place value in certain circumstances.
I don’t believe that skateboard collecting needs to be governed by anybody’s opinion and appraisal except those involved in the actual transaction.
FUCK THE POLICE. |
