So after bein back on a board for about a month I went to the local skatepark. I originally picked up santacruz freak 80's cruiser board with 60mm 78a wheels. Great for transport but terrible for the skate parks snake run and pool (not that I'm skating the pool yet anyhow but bear with me). So I went ahead and picked up a SECOND board a little shorter and slightly wider with bones g-slides 59mm 85a and they were better. Not very comfortable on the streets for cruising but not terrible but for the park still pretty soft so much so that even at 85a I had the softest wheels out of everyone. So! NOW I just put a set of g-bones re-issues on it 97a but they are 64mm because that's pretty much what I've read everywhere that for the pool you need a big hard wheel. I am completely frozen in the pool I go in there and kick turn around a little but I'm only really comfortable about 3/4 speed in the snake run bowl. My concern is do you guys think I screwed myself but putting such big (which make me higher) and hard wheels that will presumably make me faster even though the speed was kind of one of the things leading to my fears? Am I overthinking this too much? I mean I know a lot of this is all in my head and all but it's in my head so bad that I can't roll into bowl with a 2 foot roll in and it's really getting to me so I'm trying to setup my board so that I have the highest possibility of success. Right now my setup is:
Black label 12XU lucero board
Indy stage 11 169's
Bones g-bones wheels 64mm 97a
Indy risers
Bronson bearings
Pig rails
Indy soft cushions
Shorty Allen hardware

Man, set-ups are such a personal thing... I generally ride a 56-58mm wheel, but street crusising- softer, street shredding- a 95ish, skate parks- Bones SPF's or a hard wheel. But that's ME.
With your time away, it may take you a little time to find what's comfortable and what you prefer- but checking out new/different gear is half the fun, right?!? (well, not on the wallet!  )

well, there you have a nice set-up but I don't really get what your problem is. because in the end, it's about how YOU feel when riding that deck - are you comfortable with it or not?? there is no magic formula that applies to every skater in the world.
most would say 85A wheels are too soft for a modern, smooth concrete park, yes. still, others would shred'em to death. keep'em for that day you find a nice ditch or something.
64mm wheels are pretty big, yes. they'll make you higher and ask for tighter trucks in order to avoid wheelbites - and that's bad for carving a bowl or pool. STILL, no problem if you get used to it.
your 'problem' (if you really wanna call it that) sounds more like about skating that bowl. Go out there and ride that damn deck in the bowl, get used to it. If you ever notice you can't carve any better, buy smaller wheels (like Spitfire classics 58-60mm) and loosen your trucks. most of all, SKATE! |

It took me forever to find "the perfect wheel" for me.....
for me; Rainskates in the 95A/ 59mm Tsunami's are by far the best wheel I've skated.

| Man I appreciate all the replies. I know its mostly personal preference I'm just trying to gauge what is common because it seems like no real setup is like another so I want to just make sure im not too far off the mark for a starting point. |

| If its been awhile since u skated and only been back for a month it sounds like time, trial and error would be the best way to find out what feels right. I prefer small hard wheels 55- 57mm 97-99A.(I like to slide ) If I'm riding a ditch or bowl 60mm 95A |
