...im taking my family there in July next year.
any tips?
we're there for 2 weeks. 8 days on kauai. mainly surfing on the north shore. hanalei and all that.
and 6 days on oahu...
so far, were pencilled in for pearl harbour, waikiki beach, valley of the temples, wet and wild, and surfing at waimea bay.
any suggestions of other cool things to do in hawaii? |

Just did the same trip. Really liked lanikai beach on Oahu, Eat at buzz's.
The views from the top of the pillbox trail in that area are worth the climb.
Enjoy. |

I've never been to Kauai, so I can only give you Oahu advice.
Well first off, you're probably not gonna get a lot of surf at Waimea Bay in July, since the North Shore is usually pretty flat during the summer.
For waves, surf the southside. Waikiki, Ala Moana.....miles of surf breaks all along the south shore and the locals are friendly as long as you show respect, smile and dont' snake people in the water.
Just avoid Bowls, Kaisers, Threes and Kewalos because they are more localized southside breaks. There are so many, many breaks that there's more than enough for you to find your stoke and have a terrific time.
You can rent longboards over by the statue of the Duke.
When you're on the North Shore, foodwise I recommend Kahuku Superette for poke bowls, Paala Kai Bakery/ Mini Mart for Spam Musubi and fried chicken, Opal Thai for Thai food.
Cholos has mediocre Mexican food, but good margaritas. Lots of skaters work at Cholos (or at least they did one of the last time I ate there, years back...but that could have changed since the former owner Steve "Cholo" Ellis moved I believe to the Phillipines. Steves ex-wife owns and runs it now, from what I've heard.
Teds Bakery in Pupukea on the North Shore has INSANE chocolate haupia pies and great plate lunches.
Are you skating when you go out there?
Where on Oahu are you staying? I know a crazy amount of good places to eat in Waikiki/Honolulu. |

For eating in town, these are some of my favorites:
-Alicias Market in Kalihi - This place isn't actually in Waikiki, but it's right outside of the airport. When I land, and get my rental car, I stop off at Alicias market to get a to-go plate of char siu pork, roasted duck or pork with a side of poke and rice and mac salad. AMAZING food. I get it to go, and eat it in my car or at the hotel when I arrive.
-Shirokiya Food court in the Ala Moana Mall - Holy shit, the food court here is incredible with a ridiculous variety of food and Japanese beer. Google this place or look at videos of it on YouTube to see the size of this amazing food court.
-Iyasume Musubi - this is a small joint in Waikiki, but they're know for their insane Spam Musubi. I recommend the bacon/egg/spam musubi.
-Irifune - Eastside Waikiki restaurant, it's BYOB. Good Japanese food, a lot of locals eat there. Love the chicken katsu with curry sauce.
I'll post more later.... |

Not a fan of the shrimp trucks, but they are very popular with the tourists. |
