back in the day we mostly stapled out feet to the boards as it was cheaper than buying grip tape.
Then some one stapled a board to their head and skateboard collecting was born!!!
ok so I lied, there was a period where people didnt have grip tape which was quickly followed by resins with sand embedded then some people even used carpet on the decks.
All this stopped once griptake was marketed due to it being a superior solution to the problem of staying on board! |

The reason I asked is because I'm making one, I already got the shape just need to finish sanding. I'm making it out of myrtle wood aka bay laurel so I don't wanna cover it with paint or grip, I think I'll use a clear coat and some sand sprinkled under the clear coat. I'll be using some 85mm tracker trucks on it, and some cruiser wheels. should be don't by sometime next week then I'll post some pictures. |

decades ago when I couldnt afford grip tape I painted a deck in varnish and threw sand at it
worked ok until the slightest bit of water then it was dangerous.
I think grip tape is worth getting as its one less potential for injury to contend with. |

Define cruiser. My go to ride was a flat aluminium bastard with no grip and a bracket bolted onto the back to stop my foot slipping off. I discovered grip tape in 2006. |

Type in old school cruiser board on Google, I'm making one of those. the reason I don't want grip tape is I don't want to cover the wood, it's myrtle wood so it's pretty stuff, if I did do grip I would just line the edges with it. but I've heard of people doing poly and sand, polyurethane is waterproof as far as I know. alot of paints aren't that's why you would paint then put a clear coat over it to seal it. |
