Thought I'd through up a thread of the Cardiel graphic I did. It's pretty standard fare, but thought it'd be cool to see progress from start to end I guess.
Richard contacted me to do the graphic, and I had one image in my head immediately. I did a few quick sketches to send over to him for concepts (I won't post the others here since I might use them for other stuff).
The comps were hella loose, and on 8x10 paper; just to capture the idea. I'll let Richard chime in on this part, but he was iffy on it at first...
We decided it could be cool, so I started fleshing out parts to see 'what if'. I started with what I consider the main part- the name. If this part didn't work, the graphic as a whole wouldn't fly. The magenta is part of general size template I had to work with- just so I knew where things would sit in the overall composition. I made a quick pentagram lineart in Illustrator to use as a base for the shape/etc of the star....
Once I had dimensions down, I use photoshop to take the OG sketch idea and set it up on the logo:
Did the leaves and trees, roughed in a final gorilla shape. As fate would have it, we have a family pass to the zoo here. My old lady takes my daughter once a week there, and got to see the gorillas with noone else around- she got me some sick rference pics which I'll post up here as well.
started focusing on the damn dirty ape...
finished the ape (that's another side post on progress- I did the body and head, and struggled with the hands....I'll post that shit up in a minute or so, maybe some people would like to see how I went from sketch to final?). You can see where I pasted redo's of the hands into the final comp...
so then we had the final pencil tissues. We thought maybe we could do Big Mess in the leaves instead of the sign, so I knocked out this, but the sign was the winner. I don't really have a reason for that, I just thought it was fun, and a cool way to add the BM name to the graphic.
The pencils were approved, then I inked. I worked this one full size because I wanted a frame-able final ink to go with the board. What I did though was take all the final pencil art into photoshop and moved elements around here and there till the final final comp was set to size. Printed it on legal size laser prints, tiled and taped to make the master.
I work off a 13"x19" light table with Pelican ink and brush, microns (.01, .03). I used Microns for stuff like the bananas and lettering, gorilla face and hands, then used brush to do some fur details, etc...
The color seps are boring because it's Illustrator faggotry, and noone wants to know about that dirty whore program or the people who use it.
Here's the ink. All this was fueled by respect for Cardiel and Kirby, and being able to do this graphic; many Sierra Nevadas, and PBRs, some Marlboros, and my old lady and kid lovin' watching this art come from sketch to final art.
