This is something I just don't get.
I've worked off and on for some 20 action sports companies and in total anonymity; as in I don't sign my name to my work and they can't promote me. So after knocking out almost 300 graphics in 3 years for everyone in the actions sports and action clothing world I just realized something....
That my file names, what I call a file becomes the product name.
I once called a shoe design after renting a car and it was the file name and the company named it that. All I did was make some biatch ass art school grad look good.
The companies don't even ask, they just take because what becomes a slang for a project that I just randomly come up with becomes there product name. Some 50 pairs of shoes have my off the cuff name.
The thing is I retired from being an art director for fortune 500 companies so I could be a poor ass starving artist.
Now I guess I am still an inadvertent art director and marketing guy
The name for this file was "Charger" The company now calls it Charger...
You want me to name something...um you pay.
So after this, I decided since I am always right about names, about colors might as well go back into the art direction game and get paid for my aloof retardness.
This was to be part of a Rick Griffin series and they dropped the idea but still wanted the idea. I based it off of my favorite Rick art. Love the surfing eye and loved Tales from The Tube and I miss Rick. He changed my life and showed me color.
But it least it was made. |

diarrhea_cumgurgling_whore.psd.
Or...
dumpster_fuck01.pdf
Hehe.
It's my fault but never noticed it till recently that some industrial design work for a MP3 player they actually ditched there long standing name for something I just randomly named the file for. I'm talking a multi-multi-million dollar company shit canned there products name to use something I wrote in the file name and on the files notes.
It's like doing someone elses work for them because these fucks that work at a majority of these companies that take my names have big money degrees and have big money jobs.
Fuckers. |

"I'll be needed my homework done and ready for me on Monday Kray!"
It would have been nice for them to ask.
One skateboard company did it 15 times all at once took ever file name and made it into there products catalog name.
Bastards! |

Is there any benefit to going anonymous?
Also, I thought I recognized some of your work on different boards. |

Ok, being completely honest there is a major benefit to just doing work anonymously. Before I answer that this is the reality of the situation.
1. Work is work.
2. In graphic arts, layout or doing mechanicals or industrial design you don't get to sign your name.
3. I treat making logos, doing logo design or textiles or toy design or say designing graphics for bicycles a job, a privilege not a right.
4. It's work, you must remove ego from the equation.
So having said that this is the advantages; mostly being that if you love something, dig some aspect of an industry, teach yourself that skill(like industrial design or CAD) you can then apply those skills. The deal is most clients don't want to see skateboard art mixed in with industrial design, aviation technical illustrations or shoe designs. It will just look strange and isn't focused.
So...
1. If the product sucks, the designs stupid because it was under shitty-lame designs under a shitty art director it doesn't stick to you.
2. You get more work because you don't have one style.
3. You can follow your interest and tangents and not get pigeon holed.
For instance I've done a lot of beverage graphics, done stuff for the Magic Kingdom; notebooks, folders, stickers then was hit up under another profile for the same companies to do print ads and in one case do parking signs for a garage for a company I just did there print ads for.
They didn't even know I was the same guy.
And if all else fails, and trust me I have had blow outs with snotty, inept, super dicky stuck up(all women in fact) designers, art directors and marketing people so it does help to not list everything under one name.
And I can't stress this enough, the design world is run by women and art direction is run by guys. I never have issues with guys, only women being that most are failed artist and got big vagina chips on their shoulders some times.
Most are usually cool but catty, deceptive and when shit goes wrong they will put it onto you in a heart beat to save there asses and will claim your success a micro second.
So there is a few downsides to it. |
