I found a location here in Miami that could be great, only it's not paved. Location is a useless plot of land under a bridge. My goal is to put together enough promotional items and good information to present it to the commissioner of the district that the area lies within to see if the city would be willing to pave the area. I know that we are in a recession, but the current skate scene is taking a hit here with a ton of negative press about a proposed cement park, and with the people involved I'm not seeing a quick remedy to that situation other than proposing what I'm talking about. So, if anyone can help let me know. (I know about the links in here posted, etc, but since it's not paved yet I have to go at it from the start without just building and hoping.) |

We just started building and when the city found out that we actually improved the area by cleaning it up, they non-officially approved of it. The main thing that they worry about is cleaning up the graffiti.

If you are committed, pick a spot that is a real eyesore or otherwise really neglected area (on public property) so that you can "improve" it, shell out a little bit of your own cash and get a couple of friends to pitch in at first (without getting donations) and just start building. Then once some progress is made (cleaned up with a few skatable obstacles) and you get people actually skating there it will be harder for the city to say that it is a bad thing. This will also help you get donations because you will have the spot already started and then you can just hit up people, small businesses, etc and say look we already have this thing started and it is good for the community.
I would say that the best place to start would be someplace that is already paved so you can make minor modifications to the surrounding area that wouldn't be too costly to get rid of if need be.

when i was 16, me and some friends had built a skatepark and got permission from an elementary school (that my friends used to attend) to set up in their parking lot.
we had 4 quarter pipes (each 5' high, 6' wide), a 7' roll in, lots of grind boxes, rails, a pyramid, fun box, manny pads, kickers...
the entire park could be set up in a day and tore down in a day.
the only people that used it was our crew of 7 skaters (the town had about 100 people in it). we would set up the whole park every summer, and when school hours started we would only set up everything but the quarters and roll in (those transformed into a nice mini ramp w/roll in in my friends backyard).
couldn't have done it without shop class. |

the spot I am looking into is one I've been eyeing for a long while. You know when you are out and about and see something, then say to yourself "I really wish that was paved!..." Well, this is that spot. It's under a bridge, out of view from neighborhoods. The underside of the bridge has two large concrete embankments, probably about 40 ft. tall. I am going to do some photo shoots there and then try and do my graphic magic and create some large scale mockups to show to the commissioners. I also want to site parks like FDR which being diy, was built by the city initially (at least begun by them, though I don't consider just a pyramid anything much.) The point of using that park as an example is that it is so similar to the spot I'm looking at being that it is not yet paved, etc. I really need a strong argument to request the paving of a large area.
ill post some pics of the spot once I get out there with my camera. |

DIY rules, good luck dude. A few mates and I built a Crete ramp in an abandoned factory here in sydney, got 7 months outta it before fuckers bulldozed it. Good times |
