In art i am learning how to screen, i know, stoked!!!! School is actually good for something.

ANy ways i asked my teacher how to do like crazy colors in the background and she had no idea what i was talking about.

Not that i'd ever have the skill to do it but how does chicken scratch do the crazy screening jobs.

Use just enough ink so that it runs out at the point that you want the fade.

the fades are called split fountain.

pretty easy to do.

i think the circle with the 'American Nomad' wouldn't be too hard to do but i can't see it doing more than one print without the colors mixing.

Seems like the solid parts are separate screen but the fade is probably a split fountain. It's pretty important to keep your squeegee on the same path each time, eventually it will turn to doo-doo brown.

You can get similar results with halftones.

Here is a clip of a CMY wet on wet print.

fades and blends are easy shit but take practice to get good especially with water based inks and printing direct to deck. the "chicken scratch" models are a little different.

the technique is, that he is only drizzling enough ink over the screen for one pass. pulls the pass. then i assume he cleans out the remaining and drizzles again, time after time. print, rinse, repeat. that is why each one is different.

there would be no point in using multiple screens for that effect as it would be very costly and very time consuming.

again, this is only my assumption to how it is done, i have never bee to his factory to witness. although, i have done this trick many of times myself with my own prints.
