I've seen it done, I've even done it myself but with limited results

1 screen with 3 colors in a row

The first print is too solid obviously, then they get nice and blend well, then it turns to poop as the colors mix too much. especially on the squeege as they roll around.

is there a good technique to this? Maybe a name for it too?

Are you saying that you are putting 3 different colors on the screen and applying with one pull?

Sounds like it would be a one-time deal ... like you 'd have to clean the screen each pull.

Sounds like a pain in the ass!

I think wet blending is the term. I've heard others call it wet bleeds, but bleeding was a term that used at our shop for when ink goes beyond the stencil and jacks your print. sometimes screen print terminology like is like skateboarder's version of the frontside air equalling and or becoming frontside indy.

We called them "floods" when I was in the printing biz, if I understand your description right.

Do you mean like a "red, yellow, red" done through the same screen? Tight screen, sharp squeegee, thinned inks as I remember it.

Split fountain . . Art school kids are taught to call them Degrade (with the fancy french accent)

Came from offset printing where there is an ink fountain in the press that feeds ink onto the plates.

Put the ink in the screen in little triangles along the top of the screen (so the wide part of the triangle is more solid, and the thin parts mix, if that makes any sense)

Use small amounts of ink, Keep adding to the 'solid' parts of the split, scoop the ink out once it's overblended and start again.

You will have to run 3-6 shirts/prints for the ink to blend well, then start your print run. When you add more ink, run more test shirts/prints, then restart the run. If doing paper, and the blend is f-ed up, then just over print it again on the same run to smooth it out.

Charge x2 for this since you get alot of ink waste, it's a pain in the ass, and most people won't do it.

One suggestion for split fountain success is to use a gel thickener. I can't remember Nazdar's name for it, but it thickens the ink a bit, and it keeps some body until the squeegee blade scrapes it through the screen. With the thicker ink body, gravity doesn't cause so much havok and blend them so quickly.

Also, make sure your squeegee is as big as can comfortably fit in the well, if you get too much side-to-side movement, you'll deteriorate the effect.

Like Fool's Gold said, the first 4-6 passes will have streaks of unmixed color, so plan on having some newsprint to run a few off before you get to what you want to print.

I personally didn't actively try to mix like he suggests, I just put the colors where I wanted them, and let the colors mingle how they will.

Just pour less ink where you expect them to mingle (since you're adding two colors):

REDREDREDredred__yelyelYELYELYELyelyel__blubluBLUBLUBLU

=

REDREDREDREDORANGEYELYELYELYRLGREENGREENBLUBLUBLU

This Gonz I had was a great example of a good fountain.

There are 3 color layers/screens for the Gonz, and this particular one used a split fountain across all three layers.

Left to right, it used a Blue to Orange on the triangles on the left half and far right, a Purple to Pink on the Face highlights, top bar, and bottom triangles, and Yellow to Blue on the top arc and triangled behind the Face.

Subtle, but fantastic!

That's three split fountains on one deck, fucking brilliant, and I doubt there were many made like that!

Split fountain? Haha, maybe that's why we called them floods? Don't listen to me...the other guys had it right. I was in the Art Dept. I just went out to the shop to press check and smoke weed.
