I was raised by my old man and he wasn't much of a cook, as well as being fairly frugal. One of his specialties was "sweet and sour gizzards" made with chicken gizzards, rice, and one of them 35 cent seasoning packets for sweet and sour... The rice was invariably overcooked and sticky, the gizzards boiled, and the recipe on the seasoning packet called for some red food coloring for the sauce but he would skimp on that so it came out a watery grey. So gnar.

But bless him he did the best he knew how.

Hominy was the worst. From what i understand, its corn soaked in lye. Mushy as hell, and smelled like rotting ass. From some reason my parents loved it.

Disgusting.

An old girl friend's dad used to boil chicken nuggets for her. When she asked for chicken nuggets for supper, she would get whitish grey soggy lumps.

Mmmmm yummy.

She was a bag of nuts anway.

I admit, this looks disgusting, but I actually love it. My wife gags every time I make it. My mom used to try and make me eat cauliflower until the fateful night that she and my dad said I couldn't leave the table until it was all gone from my plate. I patiently sat there until they fell asleep at about 10 pm, stayed for another hour watching them sleep, then went off to bed while they had the most uncomfortable sleep of their lives. They never knew a 4 year old could sit so quietly and contently while his brother played Atari. Needless to say, they learned that I was more patient than them, and they gave up trying to make me do almost anything that I told them "wasn't happening."
