English isn't our language. We had 250 before English invasion. Most Aboriginals spoke around 5 different ones.
My ancestors were Wiradjuri (Aboriginals from central NSW) Scottish immigrants and English convicts.
My neighbours that I know in my small cul-de-sac of 16 houses are of Chilean, Maori, Belgian, French, Filipino and Italian descent along with British. That's pretty typical in your average Aussie suburb. That's why we have different languages in our cities. We unfortunately lack more Aboriginal language in public spaces however many place names are Aboriginal words or derivatives.
Some racist bogan fuck sticks got all upset about Arabic being used in some stores where Arabic speakers lived. They got owned by a good Aussie who is from NZ. This sums up my response to Dales sad comment about Arabic signs. Nobody is making you speak it mate, nobody is making you eat halal food. If you come here we won't make you drink shit Aussie beer because we have some good Belgian ones too, and we won't make you speak any of the 250 indigenous languages.

Scotty, I suggest you come and live with me for a few months here in Belgium so you can see what's happening here.
They don't force me to eat Hallal food? Yes they do. Not everywhere... yet .... but lots of schools start to only serve Hallal food so it forces to eat our children Hallal food. My wife is a teacher. And when it's the yearly schoolfeast witch is always with a BBQ and so on they only serve Hallal there anymore since the last few years. I'm not eating that so I'm not going anymore.... Sad but true.
Concerning the Arab teksts. Why is that necessary to do that? When i would migrate to another country, the first thing I would do is to learn the language, to learn the habits and way of living of the native people. I'm not saying I would throw away my roots but I would integrate, not trying to make those people living according my roots or religion, whatever. We have living scandinavian people here, Jewish people, Spanish people, ... How do you think they react/feel to see everything additional in Arab in public places and not in Jewish, Spanish, or whatever language they speak?
You know that even children on the school where my wife is teaching have to translate in Arab the best way possible for their parents (who are living here for over decades) what my wife is telling to them? She doesn't even has a clue what they are saying against each other witch gives a pretty bad feeling. It's also bad for the integration of the child itself. They learn some Dutch on school, than they have 2 months summer holiday so they speek 2 months only Arab at home and they forget 50% of what they've learnt and the first weeks she can start working on that again before starting her normal lessons. Witch also has a negative impact for the children who do speak Dutch because a backlog of the lessons in general.
Traditional feasts here threatened to be banned because a huge Muslim group claims they're an insult to them...
And I can go on with stuff like this for many more pages.
You believe it's correct what Europeans did to the aboriginals? Or to the Native people of America? Or whatever place they kolonised? I feel ashamed of that. That was not just about having the choice between a Belgian beer or an Australian beer. Those people got murdered, oppressed, taken advantage off, being abused, robbed, put in reservations, .... Off course that happened way before our time and we have no guilt to that but I really am ashamed in the past. If we're not carefull it will happen again but this time against Europeans.
And lots of you will think I'm over reacting. Well almost all of Europe thought the same until that verry day mister Adolf invaded Poland but by that time it was years too late. And we all know how that ended up.... |
