I just bought the new Alva Orca and it's a great board. Looks cool to. PoolSchool also makes a real nice deck and affordable at only 40 bucks.

Right now, my board clocks in at the 7 7/8 x 32in range. My advice to anyone thinking about starting up again would be to make the transition very gradually. Skateboards didn't turn into tongue depressors overnight, so trying to get used to riding one right away can be a potential nightmare. Just like these guys are sayin', try some of the new "old school" shapes. Beer City, Black Label, Foundation, Factory 13, and 151 all make them and they're way better than most of those boat anchors we'd ride fifteen years ago. Skate hard, brother!

Yeah, the Black Label - Jason Adams 'Punk Point' Large deck is a great size (8 X 32), with a nice, pseudo-old school shape.

I own a skate shop so it pays for me to ride new school- after a 10 year layoff ( i used to be sponsored) i pulled out the old powell team deck circa 1990 and started hitting up the parks, to my surprise I could still ollie onto picnic tables and pull decent backside airs( the new beer gut gets in the way though)
I switched to new school boards and now I can barely ollie up a 4 stair- lol
But, get any larger black label to introduce yourself to new school boards they are much lighter and better.just different.
I ride an 8.25 Hendrix model with 8 " Indy's and 60.5 mm spitfires
I will probably use a 7 7/8 for my next board- maybe an 8 but i doubt it
I will hook up old schoolers with some Black labels even the punk points for $42 plus shipping( subject to availability)

something else you guys aren't taking into consideration is the shortened wheel base on MOST new school pool boards.

This is VERY important. You won't quite notice it at first but after awhile you feel something is different. That 1/2" really makes a difference. At least it did for me. It was hard getting used to the front wheels making contact on the way down a split second before what I was used to. Sorry, I went back to my OS board. And Im a better man because of it. Starts to choke me up just thinking about it.....Im home again.

Mike

I had been riding a Foundation "spitting skull" which is 9.5x32 and a pretty comfortable ride, and I switched over to a Scum "beer run 2" that's slightly narrower but has no nose. It's a stub compared to the F.

I agree with Hammer on this one. I have found that a wheelbase of 15 1/2" is ideal. The Beer City Duane Peters Ramp/Pool/Ditch has the 15 1/2" WB. The Z-Flex has a little over 15 1/4" and it works. But, 15" or smaller just isn't enough of a WB for someone trained on old Alva and Sims decks like I was. The Jolly Afroman is a very cool board, but I can't find a WB measurement for it anywhere. I am guessing it is between 15" and 15 1/4".

I ride a Lib Tech Dragon, 9.25 x 32, with Indy 215's and Cardial wheels. Pretty sweet setup. I mainly ride the concrete parks by my house (Call me lucky cause I've got 4 within 20 minutes) and it kicks ass. Especially on the vert ramp down at Rain City.
